SYPI Program Description


Mississippi Votes is excited to host its 3rd annual Summer Youth Policy Institute (SYPI) on the campus of Millsaps College this summer. Students selected for SYPI will have the opportunity to connect with other young leaders from across the state. As part of this immersive experience, students will participate in a mock legislative session, a trip dedicated to catalysts in the Civil Rights Movement, the 2026 Democracy In Action Convening, and many other impactful activities. The Summer Youth Policy Institute is a FREE, week-long residential program running from Sunday, July 12 - Saturday, July 18, 2026 designed to equip high school students with the knowledge and skills to become future civic leaders.


Participants will engage in:

Workshops & Panel Discussions led by policy experts, community leaders, and advocates
Excursions to historic civil rights sites in Jackson and the Mississippi Delta
Hands-on Activities focused on policy-making, community organizing, and advocacy strategies
Peer Collaboration & Leadership Development
