Job description

Kelly Generator & Equipment is seeking a motivated Generator Service Technician to join our growing team. This position supports customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including Hagerstown, MD; Manassas and Loudoun County, VA; Olney, MD; and Martinsburg, WV.
The Generator Service Technician is responsible for performing planned maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs, and emergency service on commercial and industrial generator systems. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, a commitment to safety, and excellent customer service skills.
As part of our service team, technicians participate in an on-call rotation and must be available to respond to after-hours service needs during power outages and emergency situations. This role requires travel throughout the assigned service territory and a team-first mindset, with an "all hands on deck" approach during major weather events and widespread outages to ensure timely, reliable customer support.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate daily work schedules with the Service Logistics Coordinator/Dispatcher.
  • Perform scheduled planned maintenance and inspections on generator systems and related equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair generator, engine, electrical, transfer switch, and control system issues.
  • Respond to service calls and provide emergency repairs as needed.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform diagnostics using appropriate testing equipment and software.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Conduct system testing, including voltage and frequency checks, ATS testing, and load bank testing when applicable.
  • Maintain accurate service reports, work orders, and parts documentation.
  • Communicate repair status and customer concerns with office staff and management.
  • Maintain inventory, tools, and equipment assigned to company vehicles.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA guidelines.
  • Assist fellow technicians and support team operations as needed.
  • Travel to customer locations throughout the service area.
  • Stay current with manufacturer service bulletins, product updates, and training opportunities.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and provide exceptional customer service.

Qualifications:
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple service calls.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and service software applications.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work in various indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Experience:
The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
  • Experience with generators, diesel engines, automotive repair, HVAC, electrical systems, or related mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of power generation systems, transfer switches, pumps, light towers, or related equipment.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and field service repairs.
  • Familiarity with major generator manufacturers such as Generac, Cummins, Kohler, CAT, MTU, or similar brands.
  • Experience using diagnostic tools, multimeters, software interfaces, and load banks.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 110, NFPA 70E, and OSHA regulations.

Preferred Education and Certifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Technical school, trade school, or vocational training in electrical, diesel, automotive, HVAC, or related fields.
  • EGSA certification or generator-specific training.
  • Military experience, including power generation or electrical maintenance specialties.
  • Manufacturer certifications and accredited generator service courses.
