How much do midwives jobs pay per year?

As of May 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for midwives in the United States is $140,098.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $98,000.00 and $170,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Midwife, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Midwife, you need comprehensive knowledge of maternal and newborn health, clinical assessment skills, and a recognized midwifery qualification with appropriate licensure. Familiarity with prenatal monitoring equipment, electronic health records, and emergency obstetric procedures is typically required. Compassion, strong communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help midwives support women and families through childbirth. These skills are crucial to ensure safe, effective care and positive outcomes for mothers and babies during the perinatal period.

What are some common challenges midwives face when balancing clinical responsibilities with patient education and support?

Midwives often juggle multiple responsibilities, including providing clinical care, supporting expectant families, and keeping detailed records. One common challenge is finding enough time during busy shifts to offer thorough education and emotional support to patients while also handling urgent clinical needs. Building strong communication and prioritization skills can help midwives address these competing demands and ensure both patient care and education remain top priorities. Many midwives collaborate closely with nurses, obstetricians, and social workers to provide holistic care and share responsibilities.

What are midwives?

Midwives are trained health professionals who specialize in supporting women during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. They provide care, education, and guidance to expectant mothers, focusing on natural childbirth and personalized support. Midwives may work in hospitals, clinics, birthing centers, or attend home births. They also offer reproductive health services, including family planning and gynecological exams. In many cases, midwives collaborate with doctors and other healthcare providers to ensure the health and safety of both mother and baby.

What qualifications do you need to be a midwife?

To become a midwife, individuals typically need to complete a bachelor's degree in midwifery or nursing, followed by specialized training in midwifery practice. Certification or licensure from a recognized regulatory body is required to practice legally, and midwives often need to demonstrate clinical skills and pass licensing exams.
