Job description

The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, co-educational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full-time Middle School Math teacher to begin in August 2026.

Middle school teachers are responsible for developing, implementing, and advancing the Calhoun curriculum and for the success of its students. The math department faculty are highly collaborative, and they use current scholarship and inquiry-based approaches to challenge their students. We inspire students to problem-solve and strive to provide a positive learning environment in which all students can excel.

Applicants should love and appreciate working with middle school students. They should also be interested in joining an innovative community committed to progressive values and to inclusivity and diversity.

The Middle School Math teacher will report to the Director of Middle School.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION

  • Preparation of lesson plans and teaching of core Middle School Math.
  • Provision of differentiated instruction and the ability to teach students with varying learning styles.
  • Teach elective courses in math and/or robotics, coding, etc., with the possibility of expanding the robotics/coding program.
  • Collaborate with divisional leaders and colleagues in the Math department.
  • Create a positive learning environment for students and inspiring students to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character.
  • Maintain anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive narrative reports while assessing students in a rigorous and progressive manner.
  • Incorporate technology to support student learning.
  • Provide differentiated and small group instruction based on the learning modalities of students.
  • Cultivate a love of math through interactive, joyful learning.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students.

COLLABORATION/COMMUNICATION

  • Collaborate with colleagues both intra- and cross-departmentally to share best practices and ensure student progress.
  • Attend faculty meetings and conferences as needed.
  • Maintain consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails, and conferences.
  • Engage in the wider life of the Middle School - for example, serving as a faculty advisor to a student club, coaching a sport, or chaperoning a trip.
  • Display a strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Experience in designing and evaluating curriculum for math instruction.
  • Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school with a focus on experiential and place-based teaching and learning.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
