What are some common challenges faced by mid-level web developers, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Mid-level web developers often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple projects, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to prioritize tasks using project management tools, stay updated by participating in code reviews and learning sessions, and communicate clearly with designers, backend engineers, and stakeholders. Embracing continuous learning and seeking mentorship from senior developers can also support growth and help tackle complex problems more confidently.

What are Mid Level Web Developers?

Mid Level Web Developers are professionals with a few years of experience who design, build, and maintain websites and web applications. They possess strong knowledge of front-end and back-end technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often server-side languages like Python, Ruby, or PHP. At this level, developers are expected to work independently on projects, contribute to architecture decisions, and sometimes mentor junior developers. They bridge the gap between entry-level and senior developers, taking on more responsibility and complex tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Web Developer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one modern web framework, as well as a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, experience with APIs, and understanding of build tools or cloud platforms are typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you deliver robust solutions and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, maintainable applications and contributing effectively to dynamic development teams.

Our Client is a leading global financial markets infrastructure and data provider. Their purpose is driving financial stability, empowering economies and enabling customers to create sustainable growth.

Team is seeking a highly technical, hands-on Java developer. Our group is focused on bringing a new level of efficiency, transparency and openness to the trading process by building a collaborative community of investors, brokers, technology firms and content providers.

Through our modular, end-to-end trade management platform, users can: execute everything from simple single stock trades to complex strategies across markets and time zones and manage their risk throughout the trade lifecycle; access our growing network of execution brokers to route Equities, Futures or Options orders globally, as well as dozens of integrated prime and clearing brokers through our growing suite of middle office tools; and collaborate with our broker and vendor partners, who are able to efficiently plug into our platform to reach our community.

This role involves maintenance and enhancement of existing backend and web-based applications, and contributing to the evolution of our trading platform and web user interfaces.

Responsibilities:

โ€ข Contributes to design, development, and implementation of backend services and web applications.

โ€ข Writes clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following established engineering practices.

โ€ข Participates in technical design discussions and collaborates with senior engineers and architects.

โ€ข Works closely with frontend developers to integrate backend services with UI components.

โ€ข Supports troubleshooting, debugging, and performance optimization of applications.

โ€ข Breaks down user stories into technical tasks and delivers within agreed timelines.

โ€ข Collaborates effectively in Agile teams with product owners, QA, and other developers.

โ€ข Maintains and improves existing systems while ensuring stability and reliability.

โ€ข Builds positive relationships within the team and contributes to a collaborative environment.

โ€ข Communicates technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

โ€ข Continuously develops technical expertise and stays up to date with modern technologies and frameworks.

Mandatory Skills Description:

โ€ข Strong Java fundamentals (Java 21 preferred) including core concepts (collections, concurrency, memory management).

โ€ข Solid experience with Spring Framework (Spring 4+) and Spring Boot 3.x.

โ€ข Experience building and consuming REST APIs.

โ€ข Good knowledge of React (version 17) and integration with backend services.

โ€ข Strong understanding of web application architecture and client-server communication.

โ€ข Experience with SQL and relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL).

โ€ข Proficiency with version control (Git) and build tools (Maven/Gradle).

โ€ข Strong focus on clean code, unit testing, and code reviews.

โ€ข Familiar with Agile development practices.

โ€ข Comfortable working in Linux/Unix environments.

โ€ข 5-8+ years of software engineering experience.

โ€ข Experience with trading platforms is preferred; however, candidates with broader financial services systems experience will also be considered.

Nice-to-Have Skills Description:

โ€ข Experience with JSF / JSP applications and legacy UI technologies.

โ€ข Familiarity with modern frontend practices and component-based architectures.

โ€ข Experience with CI/CD pipelines and testing practices.

โ€ข Exposure to Docker / containerization.

โ€ข Basic understanding of distributed systems.

โ€ข Familiarity with Spring ecosystem tooling.

โ€ข Knowledge of financial systems or trading platforms is a plus.

โ€ข BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent software engineering qualification.
