What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, problem-solving, and engineering fundamentals, usually supported by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and project management systems is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork abilities help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage project challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for driving project success, ensuring quality engineering solutions, and advancing in your engineering career.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a mid-level mechanical engineer expect to handle on a typical team?

As a mid-level mechanical engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, often taking ownership of specific components or subsystems within larger engineering efforts. You'll collaborate closely with senior engineers, designers, and cross-functional teams such as manufacturing and quality assurance to ensure your designs are feasible and meet project requirements. Typical responsibilities include conducting design analyses, creating CAD models, preparing technical documentation, and supporting prototype builds or testing. This role often balances hands-on technical work with project coordination, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

What does a Mid Level Mechanical Engineer do?

A Mid Level Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems and components. They typically work on projects involving machinery, engines, tools, or thermal devices, collaborating with other engineers and professionals to ensure products meet specifications and safety standards. At the mid level, these engineers may also oversee junior staff, manage parts of larger projects, and contribute innovative solutions to engineering problems. Their role bridges hands-on technical work and project management responsibilities.

Job description

Engineering data centers with precision and expertise.
At Strategic Mission Critical, we are more than just engineers; we are experts focusing solely on mission critical facilities. Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape.
As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates - fueled by AI and the expanding digital landscape - SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We're seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm.
SMC is actively looking for Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer/Designer to execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, design of fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and various system calculations.
This candidate shall be capable of executing basic mechanical design projects independently, taking established design criteria through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The candidate shall also be capable as serving as a key contributor in part of a larger mechanical design team on large and/or complex mission critical projects under the guidance of a senior engineer. The mechanical design scope will be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate should be capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, structural, etc.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable mentoring recent graduates and junior designers and engineers, reviewing the work of others, and collaborating with senior engineers to implement broad project goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This candidate will have the opportunity to execute mechanical design of various project types while working and coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines, as well as serve as the daily lead on smaller projects. This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
  • Perform airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems.
  • Understand and develop hydronic & air flow diagrams for various system types.
  • Select and specify HVAC equipment
  • Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications to grow a broader understanding of the construction process.
  • Have experience with the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams.
  • Have the ability to travel when required to project sites (approximately 10-20% travel).
  • Have the ability to clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Lead junior engineers, designers, and modelers, and coordinate the tasks of small project teams to execute delivery of specific design elements.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, designers and modelers to assist in developing mechanical design knowledge base.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4-year degree in mechanical engineering or architectural engineering with a preferred mechanical focus. 2-year degrees and MET degrees with work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in facility HVAC design, particularly using Autodesk Revit for drawing development.
  • Experience in mechanical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with experience in mission critical design a plus.
  • Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittals and shop drawings, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
  • Experience leading small mechanical design teams and having some client interface experience is preferred.
  • Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Basic understanding of controls for mechanical systems is a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
