What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and familiarity with simulation software and industry standards (such as ASME or ISO) are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication help engineers collaborate and innovate in multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure reliable, efficient, and safe mechanical solutions that meet project specifications and industry requirements.

How does a Mechanical Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during the product development process?

Mechanical Design Engineers frequently work alongside teams such as electrical engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure that designs are feasible, manufacturable, and meet all functional requirements. Regular cross-functional meetings, design reviews, and iterative feedback sessions are common parts of the workflow. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as changes in one aspect of the design can impact other disciplines, making collaborative problem-solving a key part of the role.

What is mechanical design?

Mechanical design is the process of creating and developing components, systems, or machines to perform specific functions efficiently, reliably, and safely. It involves using engineering principles to select materials, define dimensions, and specify manufacturing methods. Mechanical designers use tools like CAD software to create detailed drawings and prototypes, ensuring their designs meet technical, economic, and safety requirements. The field spans a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and consumer products.

Can you make $250,000 as an engineer?

Mechanical engineers can earn $250,000 or more annually with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership roles such as engineering managers or specialized consultants. Salaries vary by industry, location, and company size, with top earners often working in high-demand sectors or in senior positions. Achieving this level typically requires a combination of technical expertise, project management skills, and years of experience.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanical DesignMechanical Engineering
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labs, product development teamsDesign, analysis, testing labs, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageProduct design, CAD modeling, prototypingSystem analysis, thermodynamics, structural analysis
Common Search IntentDesign-focused roles, CAD skills, product developmentEngineering principles, system analysis, project management

Mechanical Design primarily focuses on creating detailed models and drawings of mechanical components using CAD tools, emphasizing product development and prototyping. Mechanical Engineering encompasses a broader scope, including analysis, testing, and applying engineering principles to develop and optimize mechanical systems. Both roles often overlap but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Satwave Arrays, Inc. develops advanced flat-panel active electronically steered array (AESA) satellite terminals. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead and execute mechanical design for complex RF systems in production and prototype environments.
This role blends hands-on design, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and leadership of a small mechanical engineering team. It is an in-person position located in Doraville, GA.
Education
Bachelors or Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Masters preferred
Responsibilities
Lead mechanical design of AESA satellite terminal systems from concept through production
Serve as mechanical technical authority for assigned programs
Manage tasking, technical direction, and work product of a small local and remote mechanical engineering team
Conduct performance reviews and mentor junior engineers
Develop and maintain mechanical engineering processes, work instructions, and best practices
Own mechanical requirements derived from customer, electrical, RF, thermal, and environmental constraints
Thermal modeling, design, and validation of electronic assemblies and system-level enclosures
Collaborate closely with electrical and RF engineers during design iterations
Translate system-level requirements into manufacturable mechanical designs
Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) across CNC machining, sheet metal, extrusions, castings, additive processes, molded elastomeric gaskets, custom seals, and other forms of manufacturing
Interface with vendors and manufacturers to understand processes, tolerances, and constraints
Support rapid prototyping and iterative design cycles
Validate that mechanical designs meet all functional and environmental requirements
Plan and support environmental, shock, vibration, and thermal testing
Inspect and validate received parts against drawings; support First Article Inspection
Perform tolerance stack-ups and fit/flatness analysis for antenna array assemblies
Own mechanical documentation, drawings, BOMs, and change management
Use PDM/PLM best practices for document control, releases, and ECOs
Support program planning by estimating task durations and schedules
Contribute to technical documentation and customer-facing presentations
Required Skills and Experience
5+ years professional mechanical design experience
Demonstrated ability to make, present, and defend engineering trade decisions
U.S. citizenship required due to work on U.S. export-controlled technologies (ITAR/EAR)
Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings)
Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
Experience with PDM/PLM systems and formal change control
Experience designing hardware for production, not just prototypes
Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping and vendor-based fabrication
Experience managing or technically leading small engineering teams
