Mid Level Mechanical Engineer Eit information

What is a mid level mechanical engineer EIT?

A Mid Level Mechanical Engineer EIT (Engineer-in-Training) is an engineering professional who typically has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and is working toward obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license. At the mid-level, this engineer has several years of experience and is responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems under the supervision of a licensed PE. They often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, assist in project management, and contribute to technical documentation. The EIT designation demonstrates a commitment to professional growth and is an important step in an engineering career.

What does a mid level mechanical engineer EIT do?

As a Mid Level Mechanical Engineer EIT, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, ranging from designing mechanical components to assisting in the development of larger systems such as HVAC, automotive, or manufacturing equipment. Your daily tasks may include creating CAD drawings, performing engineering calculations, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and supporting project managers in meeting deadlines. You'll also have opportunities to contribute to project planning, quality control, and client meetings, gaining exposure to both technical and project management aspects within a collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level mechanical engineer EIT?

To thrive as a Mid Level Mechanical Engineer EIT, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, project management skills, and an accredited engineering degree along with EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), FEA tools, and industry codes is typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set standout candidates apart in collaborative engineering environments. These competencies are crucial for delivering effective design solutions, ensuring compliance, and contributing to successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Mid Level Mechanical Engineer Eit vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMid Level Mechanical Engineer EitMechanical Designer
CredentialsEngineering degree, EIT certification, some work experienceTypically an engineering or drafting background, may not require EIT
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project management in engineering firms or manufacturingDrafting, creating detailed drawings, CAD work
Industry UsageEngineering consulting, manufacturing, energy sectorsProduct design, construction, manufacturing industries

Mid Level Mechanical Engineer Eit professionals focus on engineering analysis, design, and project coordination, often requiring EIT certification. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed drawings and CAD models. While both roles work closely in product development, the engineer has broader responsibilities in analysis and project oversight, whereas the designer specializes in detailed design work.

What other jobs can I do as a mid level mechanical engineer EIT?

A mid-level mechanical engineer EIT can pursue roles such as mechanical design engineer, project engineer, manufacturing engineer, or quality engineer. These positions often require knowledge of CAD software, engineering principles, and sometimes additional certifications like PE or PMP, depending on the industry and responsibilities.

Job description

Description
Applied Technology Solutions, Inc. (ATS) is seeking a motivated Mid Level Mechanical Engineer (III) – Piping Systems to help solve challenging, real-world engineering problems for complex piping and mechanical systems. As a key member of a multidisciplinary team, you will lead tasks, own designs from concept through delivery, and see your work come to life in test and operational environments.

A successful candidate will:

  • Develop innovative designs for piping systems and related mechanical hardware (e.g., test fixtures, custom assemblies, pressure vessels, weldments)
  • Translate customer requirements into clear, detailed design criteria and robust engineering solutions
  • Serve as a task lead on key efforts while also contributing as an individual designer/analyst
  • Collaborate closely with engineers across disciplines to ensure full system integration
  • Work directly with designers, fabricators, and operators to ensure hardware is manufacturable, maintainable, and safe
  • Mentor and train junior engineers through on-the-job guidance and structured mentorship activities

Responsibilities

  • Perform task lead activities to ensure designs meet technical, schedule, and quality expectations
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers in problem solving, critical thinking, and the application of sound engineering processes
  • Develop innovative designs for custom mechanical and structural hardware supporting piping and related systems
  • Create design documentation including presentations, white papers, calculation packages, and technical reports
  • Review design documentation prepared by other ATS engineers and third-party partners
  • Present designs, analysis results, and design progress to internal stakeholders and customers for review and feedback
  • Perform structural and, as applicable, aerothermal, thermal-structural, and flow analyses using hand calculations and appropriate software tools to validate mechanical designs

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • BS in Engineering or related technical field (equivalent experience may be accepted)
  • Secret DoD Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret DoD Clearance
  • Desired experience with tools such as CAESAR, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, Smap3D, Plant 3D, ANSYS, ABAQUS, and MATHCAD
  • Familiarity with CAD modeling, drawing development, and GD&T
  • Experience applying engineering codes and standards such as ASME BPVC, ASME B31.3, AISC 360-10, AWS D1.1, ASME Y14.5, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
