Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student information

What does a mid level electrical engineer student do?

A Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student is someone who is typically in their third or fourth year of an electrical engineering degree program. They have acquired foundational knowledge and skills in the field and may be involved in internships, research projects, or co-op programs to gain practical experience. Their work often includes assisting with circuit design, testing electronic components, programming, and collaborating on engineering projects under supervision. This role helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional engineering work, preparing students for full-time engineering positions after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level electrical engineer student?

To thrive as a Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and mathematics, typically supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, and simulation tools, as well as familiarity with laboratory equipment, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you excel in project-based and collaborative environments. These skills ensure you can contribute meaningfully to engineering projects, bridge theory with practical application, and prepare for professional advancement.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a mid level electrical engineer student expect to handle during their internship or co-op?

As a Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting in the design, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical circuits or systems. Your daily tasks might include working with CAD software, analyzing data, preparing technical documentation, and collaborating with senior engineers or cross-functional teams. You'll likely participate in team meetings, contribute to ongoing project discussions, and may even present findings to supervisors. This experience helps you build practical skills, develop industry connections, and gain exposure to real-world engineering challenges.

What is the difference between Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student vs Electrical Engineering Intern?

AspectMid Level Electrical Engineer StudentElectrical Engineering Intern
CredentialsEnrolled in electrical engineering program, some coursework completedTypically undergraduate student, limited coursework or internship experience
Work EnvironmentPart-time or project-based roles, often in labs or on-siteTemporary, supervised internship in company settings
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with design, testing, and documentation under supervisionSupporting engineering teams with basic tasks and learning
Industry UsageUsed by students gaining practical experience during studiesUsed by companies to evaluate potential future employees

In summary, a Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student is typically a student with some coursework involved in electrical engineering, working on projects or tasks under supervision. An Electrical Engineering Intern is usually an undergraduate student gaining practical experience through a temporary internship. Both roles serve educational purposes but differ in responsibilities and work scope.

What can I do with a BS in electrical engineering?

A mid-level electrical engineer with a BS in electrical engineering can work in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components across industries such as power, electronics, and telecommunications. They often use tools like CAD software and may pursue certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) to advance their careers. Job roles include circuit design, systems analysis, and project management, typically requiring strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of industry standards.

Job description

The Electrical Engineer specifies, designs, and seals electrical drawings for government facilities, including secure and sensitive facilities, and for mobile platforms, in support of MAG Aerospace's U.S. Government defense programs. The role carries the electrical design from requirements and specification through sealed, construction-ready drawings and construction support. Reporting to program leadership, it applies across a portfolio of programs rather than any single effort.

The position designs facility and platform electrical systems, power distribution, grounding and bonding, backup power, and low-voltage electronic security, audiovisual, and information-technology infrastructure; produces and seals the drawings; and supports the design through construction and integration. The role is open at the mid-career and senior levels and requires an active PE license and the ability to seal drawings.

Must be US Citizen

Must be able to work on-site daily

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Specify, design, and seal electrical drawings for government facilities, including secure and sensitive facilities, and for mobile platforms.
  • Design facility power systems, including service and distribution, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, load and fault calculations, protective-device coordination, and arc-flash analysis, to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and applicable Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
  • Design grounding, bonding, lightning protection, and backup power (generators, uninterruptible power supplies, and automatic transfer switches) for mission-critical and secure facilities.
  • Design electrical systems for secure and sensitive facilities, including the separation and emission-security measures such facilities require, in coordination with security engineering.
  • Design and integrate electronic security systems (access control, intrusion detection, and video surveillance) and their power and cabling infrastructure.
  • Design audiovisual, video-teleconferencing, information-technology, and structured-cabling infrastructure for secure and sensitive facilities.
  • Design mobile platform electrical systems: vehicle power to MIL-STD-1275, alternators, battery, inverter, and regulated distribution, and wiring, harness, and grounding, in support of the platform team.
  • Produce, review, and configuration-control the electrical drawing set, and support the design through construction, installation, inspection, and authority-having-jurisdiction review.

REQUIRED / MINIMUM SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Facility electrical design, including power distribution, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, load and short-circuit and coordination studies, grounding and bonding, and backup power, to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and NFPA 70E.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and sealing stamped electrical drawings for construction, and interfacing with the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Department of Defense project experience and familiarity with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
  • Secure and sensitive facility electrical design, including separation and emission-security measures.
  • Experience with electronic security systems, audiovisual and video-teleconferencing, and information-technology and structured-cabling infrastructure.
  • Electrical design experience for platforms or vehicles, including direct-current power, wiring, and grounding (MIL-STD-1275 and MIL-STD-461 as applicable).
  • Proficiency in electrical CAD and drawing production (AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent).

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Prior U.S. military service, or direct experience supporting U.S. military operations.
  • ICD 705 and secure-facility accreditation experience.
  • PE licensure in multiple states, or an NCEES record for expedited comity licensure.
  • Experience with lighting design, mechanical and electrical coordination, and renewable or backup-power integration.
  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in electrical engineering, with the ability to seal drawings

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program

Master's degree is a plus.

MINIMUM YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Up to 10 or more years, including lead design responsibility for facility and mission-critical electrical systems.

Requires demonstrated experience producing electrical construction drawings.

Department of Defense, secure-facility, ICD 705, electronic security, and audiovisual and information-technology experience is strongly desired.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND CLEARANCE

An active or current Top Secret/SCI (TS/SCI) clearance, or be able to obtain and maintain, a U.S. Department of Defense Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information access (TS/SCI).

U.S. citizenship is required.

TRAVEL

Up to 25 percent, including OCONUS site surveys and construction support at Government sites.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed in office, laboratory, high-bay, facility, construction, and field environments. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, access construction and equipment areas, and work in and around vehicles and secure facilities.
