What does a mid level electrical engineer student do?

A Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student is someone who is typically in their third or fourth year of an electrical engineering degree program. They have acquired foundational knowledge and skills in the field and may be involved in internships, research projects, or co-op programs to gain practical experience. Their work often includes assisting with circuit design, testing electronic components, programming, and collaborating on engineering projects under supervision. This role helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional engineering work, preparing students for full-time engineering positions after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level electrical engineer student?

To thrive as a Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and mathematics, typically supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, and simulation tools, as well as familiarity with laboratory equipment, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you excel in project-based and collaborative environments. These skills ensure you can contribute meaningfully to engineering projects, bridge theory with practical application, and prepare for professional advancement.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a mid level electrical engineer student expect to handle during their internship or co-op?

As a Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting in the design, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical circuits or systems. Your daily tasks might include working with CAD software, analyzing data, preparing technical documentation, and collaborating with senior engineers or cross-functional teams. You'll likely participate in team meetings, contribute to ongoing project discussions, and may even present findings to supervisors. This experience helps you build practical skills, develop industry connections, and gain exposure to real-world engineering challenges.

What is the difference between Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student vs Electrical Engineering Intern?

AspectMid Level Electrical Engineer StudentElectrical Engineering Intern
CredentialsEnrolled in electrical engineering program, some coursework completedTypically undergraduate student, limited coursework or internship experience
Work EnvironmentPart-time or project-based roles, often in labs or on-siteTemporary, supervised internship in company settings
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with design, testing, and documentation under supervisionSupporting engineering teams with basic tasks and learning
Industry UsageUsed by students gaining practical experience during studiesUsed by companies to evaluate potential future employees

In summary, a Mid Level Electrical Engineer Student is typically a student with some coursework involved in electrical engineering, working on projects or tasks under supervision. An Electrical Engineering Intern is usually an undergraduate student gaining practical experience through a temporary internship. Both roles serve educational purposes but differ in responsibilities and work scope.

What can I do with a BS in electrical engineering?

A mid-level electrical engineer with a BS in electrical engineering can work in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components across industries such as power, electronics, and telecommunications. They often use tools like CAD software and may pursue certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) to advance their careers. Job roles include circuit design, systems analysis, and project management, typically requiring strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of industry standards.

Job description

Engineering data centers with precision and expertise.
At Strategic Mission Critical, we are more than just engineers; we are experts focusing solely on mission critical facilities. Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape.
As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates - fueled by AI and the expanding digital landscape - SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We're seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm.
Position Opening:
SMC is actively looking for a Mid-Level Electrical Engineer to execute electrical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, design of fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and power systems studies such as Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash.
This candidate shall be capable of executing basic electrical design projects independently, taking established design criteria through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The candidate shall also be capable as serving as a key contributor in part of a larger electrical design team on large and/or complex mission critical projects under the guidance of a senior engineer. The electrical design scope will be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate should be capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (mechanical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, structural, etc.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable mentoring recent graduates and junior designers and engineers, reviewing the work of others, and collaborating with senior engineers to implement broad project goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This candidate will have the opportunity to execute electrical design of various project types while working and coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines, as well as serve as the daily lead on smaller projects. This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Design electrical infrastructure for mission critical buildings and campuses including medium voltage distribution; highly redundant power systems including various redundancy topologies such as distributed and block redundant; on-site generation and UPS backup; typical building systems such as small power, lighting, grounding, and fire alarm.
  • Coordinate with all internal and external disciplines for required electrical power connections.
  • Coordinate monitoring system interfaces for electrical equipment with controls and telecommunications engineers.
  • Be familiar with the basics of electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS).
  • Be capable of reviewing and understanding client standards, design criteria, applicable standards, and best practices in order to apply them to a design project.
  • Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications.
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit on a daily basis to produce detailed design documents.
  • Have experience with the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams.
  • Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Have the ability to travel when required to project sites (approximately 10-20% travel).
  • Have the ability to clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Lead junior engineers, designers, and modelers, and coordinate the tasks of small project teams to execute delivery of specific design elements.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, designers and modelers to assist in developing electrical design knowledge base.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 4-year degree in electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus preferred. 2-year degrees and EET degrees with work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in facility electrical design, particularly using Autodesk Revit for drawing development.
  • Experience in electrical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with experience in mission critical design a plus.
  • Experience performing and reviewing power studies such as Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash is a plus. Familiarity with these studies is preferred.
  • Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittals and shop drawings, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
  • Experience leading small electrical design teams and having some client interface experience is preferred.
  • Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Basic understanding of power monitoring systems for electrical systems is a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
