What is a mid level developer?

Mid Level Developers are software professionals who have gained several years of experience beyond entry-level positions and are proficient in coding, debugging, and collaborating on projects. They possess a strong understanding of programming languages, frameworks, and software development processes. Mid Level Developers often take on more responsibility than junior developers, such as mentoring newer team members, contributing to architectural decisions, and ensuring code quality. They are expected to work independently on tasks, communicate effectively with team members, and deliver reliable solutions to complex problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level developer?

To thrive as a Mid Level Developer, you need solid programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks such as React or Spring Boot is typically required. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and strong communication skills help you collaborate and adapt to project needs. These abilities ensure you can deliver reliable code, work smoothly with colleagues, and contribute to successful software projects.

What opportunities for professional growth can a mid level developer typically expect within a software development team?

As a Mid Level Developer, you can expect to take on more complex projects, mentor junior team members, and gradually assume greater ownership of features or modules. Many organizations support growth through peer code reviews, access to learning resources, and the chance to participate in architectural discussions. Advancement paths often include moving toward senior developer roles, technical leads, or specializing in areas like DevOps or security, depending on your interests and the company's needs.

Job description

About the Role

This is a full-stack product engineering role at an early-stage AI startup in the recruiting and talent space. You'll work closely with a small founding team — spanning product and design — to own features end-to-end, integrate AI/LLM capabilities into core product flows, and help shape the technical foundation as the company scales.

What You'll Do
  • Own product features from scoping through deployment, including API design, data modeling, and frontend and backend implementation.

  • Ship user-facing experiences that balance usability and performance, iterating based on feedback and metrics.

  • Integrate LLMs and AI services into production product flows in a reliable, user-focused way.

  • Design and implement scalable backend services, data schemas, and operational tooling including CI/CD, monitoring, and automated testing.

  • Collaborate directly with founders, product, and design to prioritize work and define success metrics.

  • Participate in architecture and roadmap discussions, making pragmatic tradeoffs suited to early-stage growth.

What We're Looking For
  • 2–8 years of software engineering experience with a track record of shipping user-facing products.

  • Strong full-stack skills: TypeScript and React/Next.js on the frontend; Python or Node.js on the backend.

  • Experience with PostgreSQL and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.

  • Hands-on production experience integrating LLMs or AI services (engineering focus, not research).

  • Solid product sense — ability to translate user problems into practical, measurable solutions.

  • Comfortable operating in small teams with limited process, high ambiguity, and shifting priorities across frontend, backend, and DevOps.

  • Experience implementing monitoring, observability, and automated testing as part of CI/CD pipelines (metrics, tracing, logging, health checks).

  • Familiarity with multi-tenant or enterprise-ready systems, real-time architectures, and high-throughput application design.

  • Experience in or familiarity with regulated industries (healthcare, fintech, legal) or complex internal tooling is a plus.

  • Comfort with AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., Cursor or similar) is a bonus.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $150,000 – $300,000 USD annually. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

Location

On-site in San Francisco, California, United States.
