Job description

The Back End Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining highly available infrastructure across virtualized and hybrid cloud environments. This role supports the automation and management of data center infrastructure, leveraging modern configuration management and infrastructure-as-code practices to improve scalability, consistency, and efficiency.

In this role, you will help transform platforms, systems, and applications into reusable, modular components using virtualization and containerization technologies. You will work extensively with Red Hat technologies, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenStack, to deploy, configure, and maintain cloud environments—often within complex or air-gapped settings. This includes building and managing Docker containers, as well as using tools like Ansible and Terraform to provision and configure infrastructure.

You will contribute to the full lifecycle of OpenStack environments, from installation and integration into existing networks to scaling services and troubleshooting core system functionality. This may involve diagnosing issues at the code level, including reviewing Python stack traces and supporting resolution of system-level defects.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working in Agile or DevOps-oriented environments and understands how software development lifecycle practices apply to infrastructure and system management. Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar technologies is important. A strong foundation in Python is also expected to support debugging, automation, and collaboration with upstream development communities when needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide subject matter expertise in support of assigned technical tasks and program objectives.
  • Apply analytical skills to support process improvement initiatives, specialized studies, and requirements definition activities.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical deliverables, including requirements documentation, functional models, system procedures, and architectural artifacts.
  • Perform back-end engineering activities in support of system design, development, and integration efforts, including architecture development for new and existing capabilities.
  • Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs, databases, and data models to support system functionality, scalability, and performance.
  • Optimize and enhance backend systems through data modeling, performance tuning, and integration support across applications and services.
  • Apply specialized technical expertise to ensure solutions are aligned with system requirements, technical standards, and mission needs.

You MUST have:

  • A DoD TS clearance is required; DoD TS/SCI preferred.
  • 7 years of software development experience in object-oriented and scripted languages with the ability to apply several tool suites related to DevSecOps, microservices and containers.
  • 5 years of experience with at least five (5) of the following: Postgress, RDS, Exodus, Python, Luna, Java, Docker, OpenJDK, Ansible, Packer, Maven, Kubernetes, Red Hat
  • 3 years of experience performing back-end web design and development.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing, conducting, and documenting various systems tests and results to verify system operability and compliance with project standards and requirements.
  • Experience in relational databases, RESTful API development and communication, and system integrations.
  • 5 years of experience with Jenkins and Gitlab.
  • 3 years of experience with bug tracking software (e.g., Jira).
  • 3 years of experience testing web-based applications.
  • 3 years of experience participating software development programs or projects.
  • Experience with integrating data from unclassified to classified application deployments.
  • 3 years of experience with the following: AWS Infrastructure, Kubernetes, and RedHat Linux.

It’s GREAT if you also have:

  • Experience using Agile Test-Driven development.
  • Experience integrating into DoW DevSecOps environments.
