As a Wireless Network Engineer II, you will help design and deploy the latest and most secure Wireless solutions to Microsoft facilities worldwide. You will partner with our outsourced vendors and direct them remotely to commission and test these Wireless networks. You will develop and maintain scripted automation to help automate specific workflows. Your responsibilities will also include daily operations and maintenance of these essential Wireless services as part of a 7*12 on-call rotation within the team. A solid understanding of security technologies and service models related to Wireless networking is crucial to ensure that these foundational services are architected, designed, deployed, and maintained to the highest standards.

Responsibilities
    • Design & Standards: Contribute to the development and maintenance of wireless network designs, standards, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) that align with architectural, security, and operational requirements.
    • Deployment, Migration & Device Lifecycle: Deploy and migrate wireless network infrastructure across corporate campuses, offices, and customer-facing facilities. Support hardware refresh initiatives and lifecycle transitions by coordinating delivery, staging, and implementation activities.
    • Vendor & Partner Coordination: Work with deployment partners and vendors to implement, validate, and document solutions in accordance with established engineering standards and requirements.
    • Core Network Engineering: Design, implement, and support enterprise network services, including wireless LAN controllers (WLCs), wireless access points (WAPs), switching, routing, authentication, segmentation, and Out-of-Band (OOB) management connectivity that support global infrastructure operations.
    • Campus Fabric & Access: Implement campus networking and access technologies, including 802.1X/IBNS policies, captive portals, and network segmentation solutions.
    • Technology Evaluation & Adoption: Assess, test, and introduce networking platforms, software releases, and emerging technologies to support network performance, security, availability, and operational requirements.
    • Automation, Telemetry & Observability: Develop and maintain automation solutions, tooling, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC). Enhance network observability through telemetry and monitoring capabilities to support deployment efficiency, operational consistency, troubleshooting, and service management.
    • AI-Assisted and Agentic Engineering: Identify opportunities to apply AI-enabled capabilities, automation, and analytics to network design, operations, and support processes.
    • Documentation & Inventory Management: Maintain network documentation, implementation records, and inventory information to support operations, compliance, and lifecycle management activities.
    • Security & Compliance: Support security, compliance, and Zero Trust initiatives by collaborating with security and compliance stakeholders to identify risks and implement required controls, standards, and policies.
    • Reliability, DRI & Incident Response: Participate in a designated responsible individual (DRI) and on-call rotation to support network availability, reliability, performance, and observability. Investigate and resolve service incidents, perform root cause analysis, and track corrective and preventive actions to completion.
    • Collaboration: Partner with architects, engineers, security teams, product groups, and service owners to deliver network solutions and support ongoing improvements across the enterprise.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 2+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 5+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with wired access and authentication technologies such as 802.1X / NAC / IBNS.
  • Experience with network automation technologies such as Python, Ansible, REST APIs, Infrastructure as Code, and/or streaming telemetry to automate deployment, configuration, and operational tasks.
  • Experience applying AI technologies to engineering or operations - such as AI-assisted tooling, AI agents/copilots, LLM-based automation, or data-driven analytics - to improve network design, deployment, or troubleshooting.
  • Relevant network certifications are a plus - CCNA, CCNP, CWNP, etc.

Cloud Network Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
