Overview
Microsoft Consumer Marketing is seeking a highly conceptual, craft-driven Microsoft Consumer Marketing - Creative Director (Art Director) with a thorough art direction background to shape the next generation of consumer storytelling and digital experiences across Microsoft's consumer portfolio including Copilot, Surface, Windows, Microsoft 365, and emerging AI experiences. This role calls for a world-class visual thinker and maker-someone with refined taste, sharp creative instincts, and the ability to lead breakthrough work across a wide range of mediums and moments.
This candidate brings deep expertise in visual storytelling, design systems, motion, typography, photography, interaction, and emerging digital experiences. They understand how to create emotionally resonant work that is strategically grounded, culturally relevant, and executed with precision.
Reporting into marketing leadership, this individual will operate at the center of a highly matrixed organization, partnering across Integrated Marketing, Product Marketing, Engineering, and external creative partners to deliver cohesive, high-impact work that define the future of Microsoft's consumer product storytelling.
This is not a people management role. It is an individual contributor position for an experienced creative leader who can independently drive work from vision through execution while also mentoring and elevating junior creatives, freelancers, and agency partners through influence, collaboration, and creative excellence.
The Microsoft Consumer Marketing - Creative Director (Art Director) must thrive in ambiguity, navigate complex stakeholder environments with confidence, and present work with clarity and conviction. They should know how to simplify complexity, sharpen narratives, and create modern, premium creative systems that scale across launch moments, product storytelling, social, web, retail, demos, partnerships, and executive communications spanning Copilot, Surface, Windows, Microsoft 365, and future consumer experiences.

Responsibilities
• Define and lead the visual creative direction across integrated, multi-channel marketing efforts including launches, campaigns, demos, executive storytelling, and ongoing go-to-market (GTM) communications.
• Shape breakthrough creative rooted in conceptual thinking, visual storytelling, and craft execution.
• Serve as a cross-functional creative lead, partnering across Integrated Marketing, Advertising, Product Marketing, Engineering, and agency teams to solve complex business and narrative challenges.
• Lead and influence across visual disciplines including art direction, graphic design, UX, typography, motion, photography, film, illustration, 3D, presentation design, and emerging digital experiences.
• Develop and present compelling creative frameworks and narratives to executive stakeholders with clarity, confidence, and precision.
• Guide internal creatives, freelancers, production partners, and agencies to deliver strategically grounded, digitally native creative work.
• Ensure creative consistency and best practices across fast-moving, ambiguous workstreams while maintaining a high bar for taste, detail, and execution.
• Incorporate AI tools and emerging technologies thoughtfully into the creative process to accelerate ideation, production, and innovation.
• Contribute hands-on creative development when needed, including concepting, visual direction, storytelling, reviews, and refinement.

Qualifications
Required/minimum qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field AND 6+ years experience creating and leading breakthrough creative work for globally recognized brands.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in a related field AND 8+ years experience creating and leading breakthrough creative work for globally recognized brands.
    • OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience creating and leading breakthrough creative work for globally recognized brands).

Additional or preferred qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field AND 8+ years experience creating and leading breakthrough creative work for globally recognized brands.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in a related field AND 12+ years experience creating and leading breakthrough creative work for globally recognized brands.
    • OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience creating and leading breakthrough creative work for globally recognized brands.).
  • 6+ years experience shipping products, services, or games and/or delivering to customers as a result of an end-to-end design process.
  • Experience across multiple visual disciplines including digital design, motion, branding, typography, UX, and storytelling.
  • Experience with Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, motion/design tools, Microsoft products, and AI-enabled creative workflows.
  • Experience presenting to senior executives and shaping narratives with confidence and clarity.
  • Experience with modern production workflows across digital, social, web, experiential, and content ecosystems.
  • Experience working in both agency and in-house creative environments.
  • Experience with digital storytelling, and premium consumer brand craft.
  • The ability to provide a portfolio of relevant work for review.

Product Design IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800.00 - $274,800.00 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000.00 - $304,200.00 per year.
