What does a Microsoft Attorney do?

A Microsoft Attorney is a legal professional who provides legal counsel and support to Microsoft, one of the world's leading technology companies. Their responsibilities include advising on compliance with laws and regulations, drafting and negotiating contracts, managing intellectual property issues, and supporting litigation and dispute resolution. They may also handle matters related to privacy, cybersecurity, and international regulations due to Microsoft's global presence.

To thrive as a Microsoft Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, admission to the bar, and a strong understanding of technology law, intellectual property, and corporate legal matters. Familiarity with legal research databases, contract management systems, and Microsoft’s own suite of productivity tools is essential. These abilities ensure the company’s legal interests are protected, risks are managed, and business objectives are achieved within regulatory boundaries.

How does a Microsoft Attorney typically collaborate with product teams and engineers during the development of new technologies?

As a Microsoft Attorney, you will work closely with product teams, engineers, and business leaders to ensure that new technologies and features comply with legal and regulatory requirements. This often involves participating in cross-functional meetings, reviewing technical documentation, and advising on privacy, intellectual property, and compliance issues from the early stages of development. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as you'll need to translate complex legal concepts for technical colleagues and help craft solutions that balance innovation with risk mitigation. This collaborative approach not only helps safeguard the company but also fosters a better understanding between legal and technical teams.
