What is the difference between Micron Internships vs Micron Co-op Programs?

AspectMicron InternshipsMicron Co-op Programs
DurationTypically 10-12 weeks during summerUsually semester-long, 4-6 months
Work EnvironmentProject-based, focused on specific tasksIntegrated with academic coursework, collaborative
CredentialsOpen to students in relevant fields, no specific certification requiredSimilar, often targeting students in engineering or related majors
PurposeGain industry experience, explore career optionsComplement academic learning with practical work experience

Micron Internships are short-term summer programs offering hands-on experience, while Micron Co-op Programs are longer-term, semester-based opportunities that integrate work with academic studies. Both provide valuable industry exposure but differ mainly in duration and structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Micron Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Micron Intern, you typically need a solid academic background in engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with tools such as CAD software, programming languages (e.g., Python, C++), and Microsoft Office, as well as relevant coursework or certifications, is highly valued. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are essential soft skills for integrating into project teams and learning in a fast-paced environment. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, collaborate effectively, and maximize their learning experience at Micron.

What are Micron internships?

Micron internships are structured, short-term programs offered by Micron Technology, Inc., designed to give students hands-on experience in fields like engineering, business, computer science, and more. These internships typically last for 10-12 weeks during the summer and provide students with opportunities to work on real-world projects alongside experienced professionals. Interns gain valuable industry knowledge, mentorship, and networking opportunities, which can enhance their academic learning and career prospects. Many Micron interns also have the chance to be considered for full-time positions after graduation.

What types of projects do interns typically work on during a Micron internship, and how does this experience contribute to their professional development?

During a Micron internship, interns often work on real-world projects that range from process optimization in manufacturing to developing software solutions or conducting research in advanced memory technologies. These projects are designed to align with the company's current business needs and provide interns with hands-on experience in their field of study. Interns collaborate closely with experienced engineers and professionals, participate in team meetings, and may present their findings to management. This immersive environment not only builds technical skills but also enhances communication and teamwork abilities, providing a strong foundation for future career opportunities within Micron or the broader tech industry.

Job description

Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, combining global scale with an expanded portfolio of leading-edge technologies that include: 3D metrology spanning the chip from nanometer-scale transistors to micron-level die-interconnects; macro defect inspection of wafers and packages; metal interconnect composition; factory analytics; and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

The Staff Optical Engineer will lead and support the design, development, and implementation of optical metrology solutions used in semiconductor manufacturing processes. This role involves working closely with experienced engineers and crossfunctional teams to help ensure the accuracy and reliability of optical systems for wafer measurement and inspection. The Staff Optical Engineer will contribute to system development, testing, and continuous improvement efforts in alignment with production and quality goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate, and optimize optical subsystems for metrology and inspection tools used in semiconductor manufacturing.

  • Support the development and implementation of optical measurement methods such as interferometry, ellipsometry, or scatterometry for wafer inspection and process monitoring.

  • Work with mechanical, electrical, software, and process engineers to help integrate optical components and systems into semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

  • Participate in characterizing and evaluating optical system performance, helping to identify opportunities to improve measurement accuracy, stability, and throughput.

  • Assist with prototyping activities and laboratory testing of optical systems, including data collection, analysis, and documentation of results.

  • Help diagnose and resolve optical system issues under the guidance of senior engineers, contributing to rootcause analysis and corrective actions.
Create and maintain technical documentation for designs, test procedures, and experimental results in accordance with internal standards.

  • Support interactions with vendors and suppliers by helping evaluate components and verify that specifications meet system requirements.

  • Learn industry best practices and emerging optical metrology techniques while building technical knowledge through mentorship and handson experience.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field

  • Foundational knowledge of optical principles including geometrical optics, physical optics, and optical instrumentation

  • Handson experience with optical laboratory testing, alignment, or characterization (academic, internship, or industry experience)

  • Familiarity with at least one optical simulation or design tool (e.g., Zemax, Code V, COMSOL, or similar)

  • Basic understanding of optical metrology techniques such as interferometry, ellipsometry, or scatterometry

  • Experience analyzing experimental data using tools such as MATLAB, Python, or Excel

  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, crossfunctional engineering environment.
