What is a Microfinance job?

A microfinance job involves providing financial services, such as small loans, savings accounts, and financial education, to low-income individuals or small businesses that lack access to traditional banking. Professionals in this field assess loan applications, manage client relationships, and support financial literacy programs to promote economic empowerment. These roles exist in microfinance institutions (MFIs), non-profits, and banks, often requiring skills in finance, customer service, and risk assessment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Microfinance position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Microfinance, you need solid knowledge of finance, lending practices, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with loan management software and mobile banking tools, as well as certifications such as Certified Microfinance Expert (CME), are frequently beneficial. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication help to build client trust and foster community relationships. These competencies are crucial for enabling financial inclusion, managing client portfolios, and driving successful loan repayment outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in microfinance?

Professionals in microfinance often encounter challenges such as assessing creditworthiness with limited formal documentation, supporting clients in financially underserved communities, and addressing high operational costs in remote areas. They must also overcome language and cultural barriers to effectively communicate financial products and ensure client understanding. Additionally, balancing financial sustainability with social impact objectives can be demanding. Those who thrive in this field are adaptable, resourceful, and motivated by helping others achieve financial independence.

ABOUT PAGA

Paga is on a mission to enable one billion Africans and millions of SMEs to pay, preserve hard-earned income, participate in global trade, and purchase goods and services at home and abroad. We have built a multicurrency, cloud-based payments and financial services engine that leverages multiple business services built on the same best-in-class infrastructure to serve the ecosystem through three businesses - Paga Engine (Enterprise B2B - www.pagaengine.com); Paga (Consumer - www.Paga.com); and Doroki (SME Retail - www.doroki.com). Paga has three licenses with the Central Bank of Nigeria mobile money, international remittance, and a microfinance bank. Paga is headquartered out of the United Kingdom and has operating entities in Nigeria, United States, and Ethiopia. Founded in 2009, Paga now serves millions of users and businesses across Africa and beyond.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Product Marketera high-level individual contributor who is a master of the craft. This role isn't about managing a large tea; its about owning execution and strategy for our most critical product lines.

You are a "full-stack" marketer who can pivot from high-level strategic positioning in the morning to writing high-converting UI copy in the afternoon. You will be the primary link between the product's technical capabilities and the customer's lived experience, ensuring that every feature we ship solves a real problem for Nigerians.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Product Narrative & Messaging: Develop the core value propositions and messaging frameworks for Pagas consumer and merchant offerings. You ensure our voice is consistent, empathetic, and clear across every touchpoint.
  • End-to-End GTM Ownership: Lead the execution of go-to-market plans for new features. You aren't just overseeing the plan; you are building the assets, coordinating the emails, and ensuring the "in-app" experience matches the marketing promise.
  • Customer Advocacy: Act as the internal expert on our users. Youll conduct interviews and dive into user behavior data to provide the Product team with actionable feedback that shapes the roadmap.
  • Lifecycle Marketing: Work closely with the Growth team to design and optimize triggers, notifications, and educational content that move users from "signed up" to "power user."
  • Competitive Intelligence: Stay three steps ahead of the fintech curve. Youll monitor competitors and market shifts to ensure Paga remains the preferred choice for payments.
  • Sales & Agent Support: Equip our massive agent network and sales teams with the narrative tools, one-pagers, and localized content they need to drive adoption on the ground.

WHO YOU ARE

  • The Master Practitioner: You have a deep toolkit. You know how to draft a push notification sequence and analyze a cohort retention chart yourself.
  • The Bridge Builder: You can talk shop with Engineers and Designers while also being able to translate "tech-speak" into benefits that resonate with a market woman in Kano or a tech founder in Yaba.
  • Execution-Focused: You thrive on getting things done. You take pride in the quality of your output and the speed of your delivery.
  • Fintech Enthusiast: You aren't just looking for a job; you are obsessed with how technology can solve the "money problem" in Africa.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in Product Marketing. We are looking for someone who has "been in the trenches" at a fast-growing tech company (Fintech experience preferred).
  • Writing Excellence: You must be an exceptional writer. You can write punchy, persuasive copy that drives action.
  • Analytical Rigor: You are comfortable using tools like Amplitude, Mixpanel, or SQL to pull your own data and measure the success of your campaigns.
  • Adaptability: You are comfortable with ambiguity and can pivot quickly in the fast-moving Nigerian fintech space.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity and inclusion. We do not discriminate on grounds of color, race, nationality, religion, age, ethnic origin, disability, gender, marital status, or sexual orientation in our employment practices.
