Job description

Mailchimp is a leading marketing platform for small businesses. We empower millions of customers around the world to build their brands and grow their companies with a suite of marketing automation, multichannel campaign, CRM, and analytics tools.

Mailchimp's Experience Platform team is responsible for the underlying architecture and tools common across all of Mailchimp's UI to deliver a performant, delightful, and accessible web application to our users. Experience Platform supports everything from our frontend development and deployment pipelines (compilers, linters, test-runners) to the code at runtime that powers the feature layer (networking, routing, feature-flagging, data-marshaling) to observability (JS bugsnag, etc). The team's roadmap includes new development necessary to power new features; performance, ergonomic, and reliability improvements; and integration with Intuit infrastructure and capabilities.

This person will design abstractions, write documentation, define and advocate best practices, and build or adopt tools. They will partner closely with the Design System and Engineering teams to improve build and deployment systems, performance, and quality.

The ideal candidate understands the in-browser infrastructure required to run a modern web application and has built performant frontend infrastructure that scales. They have iteratively adopted new technology across large codebases and organizations, using approaches like codemods to migrate at scale. They are kind and approachable - people trust their judgment and reach out when they have questions - and they are a force multiplier who actively grows the engineers around them.

They identify which pieces of a system are high risk and mitigate those risks preemptively. They work problems-first, ensuring the most important problems get solved, and think deeply about tradeoffs when evaluating solutions. They do not shy away from significant technical debt, and they can plan and execute system-wide changes with confidence.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain the shared frontend libraries used throughout the app - including how they are packaged, versioned, and distributed - along with the build, compilation, and continuous deployment of frontend assets.

  • Maintain and improve the frontend engineering experience by establishing and socializing patterns, testing strategies, and tooling that drive consistency and engineer effectiveness.

  • Architect and implement projects consistent with our philosophy and guidelines - including micro frontend patterns and our standards for performance and accessibility - and provide technical guidance on large-scale efforts that span multiple engineering teams.

  • Design systems for agentic observability and consumability, structuring codebases for autonomous navigation, modular modification, and self-iteration.

  • Establish coding and agent best practices, taking proactive steps to reduce low-quality agent-generated output through agentic oversight, adversarial agents, and deterministic guardrails.

  • Guide engineers on breaking work into pieces that agents can execute reliably, enabling them to drive projects independently.

  • Collaborate with, mentor, and train other engineers, providing feedback on code and architecture decisions across a distributed team.

  • Ensure development focus on the company's biggest initiatives, partnering across departments to understand their operational needs and solve complex problems together.

  • Stay current on evolving tools and patterns for managing infrastructure, guiding our adoption of them when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • You have extensive experience in large-scale development environments, including building the frameworks - especially frontend - that support them.

  • You have expertise in modern frontend technologies like React, are comfortable diving into legacy technologies like Dojo, and have significant coding experience in Node, Python, PHP, Go, or similar languages.

  • You have exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills, grounded in data-driven decision making, with a track record of troubleshooting complex web applications (Bugsnag, DevTools, and log analysis tools).

  • You are fluent in agent-driven development - you orchestrate AI agents on real, complex work and hold agent-generated output to the same review bar as your own.

  • You're a thoughtful communicator - our teams are distributed, so effective written communication is key.
