What is Micro LED engineering?

Micro LED engineering involves designing, developing, and manufacturing display technologies that use microscopic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as pixels. Engineers in this field work on creating high-resolution, energy-efficient displays for products like televisions, smartphones, and wearable devices. The role requires expertise in materials science, semiconductor fabrication, and advanced electronics. Micro LED technology is valued for its brightness, color accuracy, and long lifespan compared to traditional display technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Micro LED engineer?

To thrive as a Micro LED Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, materials science, and semiconductor device fabrication, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, semiconductor processing equipment, and cleanroom protocols is typically required, along with experience in photolithography and thin-film deposition. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and innovate solutions. These skills are crucial for advancing Micro LED technology and ensuring high-quality, reliable device production in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced by Micro LED engineers during the prototyping and scaling phases of product development?

Micro LED Engineers often encounter challenges with precise alignment and bonding of tiny LED components, as well as issues related to yield and defect detection during mass production. Managing the uniformity of color and brightness across a large array is another typical hurdle, requiring close collaboration with materials scientists and process engineers. Additionally, scaling up from prototype to full-scale manufacturing demands innovative solutions to maintain performance while reducing costs and ensuring reliability.

Job description

Cupertino, CA /Optical Engineering /Full-Time

Mojo Vision is pioneering a highly flexible, wafers-in, wafers-out micro-LED platform to unlock AI applications in multiple market segments. Built over the past decade by our world-class engineers, our system-level approach combines advanced 300mm silicon architecture with GaN-on-Silicon emitters, proprietary quantum dots, photodetectors, micro-lens arrays, and packaging to solve conventional trade-offs in size, brightness, bandwidth density, and power. Our scalable, manufacturing-ready approach enables breakthrough products such as next-generation optical interconnects and AI glasses.

At Mojo, our team includes talented professionals with expertise in hardware, software, optics, photonics, electronics, chemistry, and applied physics. We are based in Cupertino, California and are backed by some of the world’s leading technology investors.

Role Overview:

Mojo Vision is seeking a hands-on Optical Test Engineer to support the characterization, qualification, and production release of advanced optoelectronic devices. This role is responsible for performing optical and electrical measurements on prototype, pilot-production, and manufacturing samples to generate high-quality data that drives engineering and manufacturing decisions. The Optical Test Engineer will operate and troubleshoot sophisticated measurement systems, execute test plans, investigate technical issues, and help ensure the successful development of new measurement systems. The ideal candidate is highly organized, results- and detail-oriented, and enjoys working directly with hardware in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Perform optical and electrical measurements using prototype and commercial test equipment. Evaluate new test procedures as needed to support new products and processes.
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory test equipment used for device characterization, qualification, and manufacturing support.
  • Execute test plans and collect accurate, high-quality measurement data in support of product development and process engineering activities.
  • Analyze measurement results, identify anomalies, and assist in troubleshooting device, process, or test-system issues.
  • Support engineering investigations by planning experiments and performing detailed measurements.
  • Maintain clear and organized records of procedures, samples received, measurements performed, results, and equipment status.
  • Assist with qualification and validation of new products, processes, and test methods.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure timely execution of testing priorities and project milestones.
  • Follow laboratory procedures and best practices to ensure safe, accurate, and repeatable measurements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts to enhanced test methods, 4automation, organization, and equipment utilization.
Required Skills:
  • BS or equivalent experience in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience performing measurements in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience programming, configuring and operating manufacturing test equipment.
  • Knowledge of optical measurement principles and characterization techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to systematically investigate technical issues.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent documentation and record-keeping practices.
  • Ability to follow test procedures while maintaining flexibility in a fast-paced development environment.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel, MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or similar software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with optoelectronic, photonic, semiconductor, display, micro-LED, imaging, or optical communication technologies.
  • Familiarity with wafer-level or device-level characterization and testing.
  • Hands-on experience with automated test systems and data acquisition software.
  • Experience supporting prototype development through pilot production and manufacturing ramp.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, measurement system validation, or process control techniques.
  • Experience maintaining, calibrating, or improving laboratory measurement equipment.
  • Exposure to cleanroom, semiconductor fabrication, or advanced manufacturing environments.
