What are MGUs?

MGU stands for Managing General Underwriter. An MGU is a specialized type of insurance intermediary that works on behalf of insurers, handling underwriting, policy issuance, and sometimes claims for specific types of insurance products. They have authority granted by insurance companies to make decisions, set rates, and manage risk within agreed-upon guidelines. MGUs are typically used for complex or niche insurance markets where specialized expertise is required.

What are some common challenges faced by Medical Gas Unit (MGU) technicians in hospital settings?

Medical Gas Unit (MGU) technicians often encounter challenges such as ensuring compliance with strict safety regulations, troubleshooting system malfunctions under time pressure, and coordinating maintenance activities without disrupting patient care. They regularly work alongside medical staff and facility managers to schedule inspections and repairs, requiring strong communication and adaptability. Staying up-to-date with evolving codes and technology is also essential to maintain safe, efficient operations in hospital environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MGU (Managing General Underwriter), and why are they important?

To thrive as an MGU, you need a thorough understanding of insurance underwriting, risk assessment, and industry regulations, often supported by a degree in business, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with underwriting software, insurance policy management systems, and relevant certifications such as CPCU or ARM is typically required. Strong negotiation, decision-making, and relationship-building skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies enable effective risk management, profitable portfolio growth, and successful partnerships with carriers and brokers.

GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC
MGU (E-Motor) Lead - Onsite
Job Summary
We're seeking a performance drive MGU (Motor Generator Unit E-Motor) Lead to join our ERS (Energy Recovery System) Team in Concord, NC. In this critical leadership role, you'll lead the design, integration, and optimization of the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) e-motor system, focusing on high-speed performance, efficiency, structural integrity, rotor-stator dynamics, thermal management, and mechanical reliability under extreme racing conditions.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams in electromagnetics, mechanical design, power electronics, controls, thermal management, and manufacturing to optimize MGU packaging and performance within the hybrid powertrain while adhering to FIA technical regulations. Lead prototype validation, testing programs, and continuous improvements to deliver race-winning e-motor solutions essential for championship success.
Key Responsibilities
  • Establish technical requirements, performance targets, and development goals for MGU e-motor components, including rotors, stators, bearings, housings, and thermal interfaces.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary teams-electromagnetics, mechanical design, thermal, controls, and advanced manufacturing-to integrate and optimize the MGU within the hybrid powertrain, ensuring maximum power density, efficiency, and race reliability.
  • Oversee prototype development, dynamometer testing programs, and data-driven iterations guiding engineering functions to achieve validated, race-ready solutions.
  • Direct design reviews, FMEA processes, documentation, and compliance with FIA F1 regulations on MGU power, weight, RPM limits, and safety interfaces.
  • Foster innovation by driving research into next-gen materials (e.g., advanced composites, magnetic alloys), manufacturing advances, and DFM/DFA principles to enable scalable, high-quality e-motor production.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (or related) with 8+ years in high-speed electric motors, motorsport ERS, or hybrid powertrains; Master's/PhD with 5+ years preferred.
  • Expertise in CAD (NX preferred), CAE/FEA, and PLM (Teamcenter) for e-motor structural and thermal simulations.
  • Proven experience with rotor-stator integration, high-speed dynamics, bearing selection, vibration mitigation, and FIA F1 power unit regulations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on motorsport prototyping, dynamometer testing, and trackside support.
  • Knowledge of advanced electromagnetic materials, high-precision manufacturing, and ML/DoE for motor optimization.
  • GD&T standards, quality systems, and cross-functional leadership in fast-paced environments.

Why Join Us
