What is a methodology?

Methodology jobs involve developing, evaluating, and implementing systematic approaches or methods for conducting research, analysis, or projects. Professionals in these roles design frameworks to ensure that data collection, analysis, and interpretation are consistent, reliable, and valid. They often work in fields such as research, statistics, social sciences, and market analysis, providing guidance on best practices and innovative methods. These roles are critical to ensuring the accuracy and credibility of findings in both academic and professional settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a methodologist?

To thrive as a Methodologist, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in research design, and typically a background in statistics or a related field. Familiarity with statistical analysis software (such as SPSS, R, or SAS) and experience with data collection methodologies are commonly required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are soft skills that help Methodologists collaborate and present findings clearly. These skills ensure rigorous, reliable research processes and enable informed decision-making based on accurate data.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in methodology development teams within organizations?

Professionals focused on methodology development often encounter challenges such as balancing the need for standardization with organizational flexibility, ensuring stakeholder buy-in, and keeping methodologies up-to-date with evolving industry best practices. Team members must frequently collaborate across departments to gather input and address varying needs, which can lead to complex negotiation and communication dynamics. Staying current with regulatory changes and technological advancements is also crucial, as methodologies must remain relevant and effective in a rapidly changing environment.

What is the difference between Methodology vs Data Analyst?

AspectMethodologyData Analyst
Required credentialsOften no formal credentials, but familiarity with research methods and frameworksBachelor's degree in statistics, data science, or related field; certifications like CAP or Microsoft Certified Data Analyst
Work environmentDesigning research approaches, frameworks, and processes; often in research, consulting, or academic settingsAnalyzing data sets, creating reports, and visualizations; in corporate, finance, healthcare, or tech industries
Employer and industry usageUsed by researchers, consultants, and project managers to structure investigationsEmployed by companies across industries to interpret data and support decision-making

While Methodology focuses on designing research frameworks and approaches, Data Analysts apply these methods to interpret data and generate insights. Both roles are essential in research and data-driven environments, but Methodology is more about planning, whereas Data Analysts execute data analysis tasks.

About Fieldguide
Fieldguide is establishing a new state of trust for global commerce and capital markets through automating and streamlining the work of assurance and audit practitioners specifically within cybersecurity, privacy, and financial audit. Put simply, we build software for the people who enable trust between businesses.
We're based in San Francisco, CA, but built as a remote-first company that enables you to do your best work from anywhere. We're backed by top investors including Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Bessemer Venture Partners, 8VC, Floodgate, Y Combinator, DNX Ventures, Global Founders Capital, Justin Kan, Elad Gil, and more.
We value diversity - in backgrounds and in experiences. We need people from all backgrounds and walks of life to help build the future of audit and advisory. Fieldguide's team is inclusive, driven, humble and supportive. We are deliberate and self-reflective about the kind of team and culture that we are building, seeking teammates that are not only strong in their own aptitudes but care deeply about supporting each other's growth.
As an early stage start-up employee, you'll have the opportunity to build out the future of business trust. We make audit practitioners' lives easier by bringing together up to 50% of their work and giving them better work-life balance. If you share our values and enthusiasm for building a great culture and product, you will find a home at Fieldguide.
About the Role
As an Audit Methodology Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping Fieldguide's methodology solutions. You will act as the bridge between audit methodology and ensuring our agentic platform delivers accurate, contextual, and explainable methodology that auditors can trust and that meets the requirements of audit standards.
You will focus on operationalizing methodology documentation and guidance within the platform. Your role will ensure the methodology and testing agents reflect professional standards, firm guidance, and industry nuances, while continuously learning and improving.
You will work closely with product, engineering, and AI teams to ensure our platform translates audit standards, methodology content and professional judgment into reliable AI-powered workflows.
This requires a detailed oriented person, solid judgment, and the ability to navigate both standardized and non-standardized content (including professional standards). It's a great opportunity for someone who is methodical, curious, and interested in learning the inner workings of financial audits.
What You'll Do
Methodology Management
  • Define the structure and logic behind Fieldguide's out-of-the-box methodology content with our methodology partners
  • Design and define how audit standards translate into methodology content and audit procedures within the platform
  • Structure guidance from US GAAS, PCAOB standards, and other relevant frameworks into usable, well-organized content
  • Identify key industry procedures, testing approaches, internal control testing and practice guidance to incorporate into methodology
  • Manage and oversee the methodology content and engagement template ingestion and review process to ensure completeness and accuracy of the methodology content
  • Review and refine methodology and engagement templates incorporating auditor feedback from real-world usage

AI Collaboration
  • Partner with AI architects and engineers to translate professional standards and practitioner judgment into prompts, workflows, and guardrails for methodology and testing agents
  • Work with product teams to turn audit standards and industry guidance into functional specifications and user workflows

Implementation & Maintenance
  • Support financial audit implementation teams, including bespoke methodology builds, customization, and annual updates
  • Ensure methodologies and customizations are implemented with appropriate quality control rigor, including version control, review/approval processes, and documentation of changes
  • Monitor regulatory and industry developments and advise on their product implications
  • Maintain and evolve the audit knowledge base as standards and guidance change

What We're Looking For
  • CPA required
  • 5+ years of public accounting experience
  • Strong expertise in AICPA auditing standards (GAAS), PCAOB and audit methodology
  • Experience with audit technology, automation, or AI-enabled tools, audit methodologies, templates, or workpapers.
  • Working knowledge of quality control/quality management standards (e.g., SQMS 1, PCAOB QC standards) as they relate to methodology development and audit documentation
  • Ability to translate professional standards into structured workflows and logic
  • Strong analytical thinking and ability to work cross-functionally with product and engineering teams
  • Interest in the intersection of audit, data, and AI

Nice to Have
  • Interest in contributing to process improvement and optimization.
  • Experience working in audit methodology or national office roles
  • Expertise in international auditing standards and methodologies
  • Exposure to LLMs, prompt design, or AI-assisted workflows
