Summary
THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.
This National Guard position is for a Meteorological Technician, Position Description D1817000 and is part of the Georgia Air National Guard.
This is a full-time, Excepted Permanent, dual status position which requires Georgia Air National Guard Membership.
Area of Consideration: Open to current members of the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve or Air Force Active Duty.

Help
As a Meteorological Technician, GS-1341-09, you will:
Provide complex operational weather support to Air Force, Army, Reserve, Guard and other DoD customers in the form of Mission Execution Forecasts (MEF). Analyze climatic regimes, geography, terrain, weather system characteristics, centralized weather products, and indigenous surface and upper air reports to forecast weather conditions for all parts of mission to include takeoff, route, target and landing for locations worldwide. Consider aircraft operating thresholds and hazards applicable to aircraft and aerial delivery systems in advising aircrews on possible impact on takeoff, route, target, and landings. Apply physical and meteorological factors in assessing the impact on specific terminal aerodromes, assault strips, landing zones, extractions zones, and land and water drop zones. Advise senior staff officers and mission commanders of possible weather impact and provide assistance in making go/no go weather decisions for impending air and ground operations.
Observe current local and world-wide environmental conditions. Evaluate records and transmit surface weather observations. Operate atmospheric instruments, weather radar and meteorological computer workstations, and utilize satellite imagery and products provided by military, national, and international weather agencies. Use detailed understanding of the atmosphere and space environment to translate raw data into useful military intelligence information. Issue advisories, watches, and warnings to alert users of dangerous or inclement weather. Work to minimize weather team limitations and maximize meteorological support capability to customers. Plan, tailor, and recommend upgrades to weather support architecture to suit mission requirements. Ensure weather team operating procedures support customer requirements and comply with higher echelon directives. Interact with higher echelon weather support teams arranging product flow and define weather team requirements.
Identify, evaluate, and monitor significant weather developments, especially as they present potential impacts on critical flight operations. Discuss the location, intensity, movement, and development potential of weather features. Provide technical guidance and instructions to technical employees in the preparation of special mission forecasts as required. Participate in daily meteorological briefings to squadron personnel.
Identify and evaluate data sources for applicability and quality; operating communications and meteorological equipment to perform automated and interactive point selection; and initiate computer generated graphic sequences to accurately load, evaluate and display meteorological charts, alphanumeric data and statistical model output. Solve a variety of meteorological problems and interpret and adapt precedents or guidelines requiring departures from previous approaches to similar projects to accommodate specialized requirements such as special missions or flights or base missions. Maintain awareness of Communication Security (COMSEC)/Operations Security (OPSEC)/Computer Security (COMPUSEC) requirements to ensure that no classified information is released to unauthorized personnel and that classified information is properly protected.
Provide technical guidance and instruction to lower graded fulltime technicians and traditional military employees. Solve a variety of meteorological problems with other production personnel. Answer request for technical information regarding regional products from field meteorologists, DOD customers and other users. Participate in technical briefings, conferences and meetings as required. Provide meteorological assistance and resolve most technical problems during the production process. Recommend techniques, methods and procedures to enlarge and improve the unit's forecasting capabilities.
Provide weather briefings for local, transient and other supported aircrews in person or by telephone or closed circuit television. Modify forecasts developed by other activities to provide information on exact conditions expected to be encountered by the aircraft for projected timeframe for the area of operation. Research climatology data to provide information and prepare briefings. Research and maintain meteorological studies and reviews.
Observe, encode, record, disseminate and evaluate weather observations. Observe weather phenomena, encode and record the observation following established instructions and guides using computer-based systems in weather station. Disseminate weather observations using the system and/or other local procedures. Assist unit personnel by issuing and tracking weather advisories as required.

  • This is an Excepted Service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.

  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

Qualifications

Military Grades: E-5.
Compatible Military Assignments: AFSC: 1W051.
General Experience: Experience measuring meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation. Observing and recording atmospheric characteristics, i.e., temperature, air movement, visibility, pressure, air density, cloud types.
Specialized Experience: Must have at least 24 months specialized experience decoding, plotting, and systematically recording data related to the physical characteristics of the atmosphere, i.e., charts, diagrams, cross sections; Collecting, analyzing, interpreting, adjusting, and verifying atmospheric and other meteorological data to confirm and improve accuracy and efficacy.
Education
Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience - A maximum of 12 months of the required experience may be substituted by successful completion of undergraduate study in an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester hours. The education must have been in fields directly related to the type of work of the position.
You must provide transcripts or other documentation to support your Educational claims. To receive credit for Education, you must provide documentation of proof that you meet the Education requirements for this position.
