Metal Forming Simulation specialists focus on modeling and optimizing metal forming processes through simulation software, while Metal Manufacturing Engineers oversee the actual production processes on the factory floor. Both roles require engineering knowledge, but their work environments and daily tasks differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metal Forming Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metal Forming Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or materials engineering, along with expertise in metal forming processes and finite element analysis (FEA). Proficiency in simulation software such as AutoForm, LS-DYNA, or Abaqus, and familiarity with CAD systems, are typically required, and certifications in FEA tools are advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating with diverse teams. These skills ensure accurate simulation results and optimized manufacturing processes, which are critical for cost efficiency and product quality.

What is metal forming simulation?

Metal forming simulation is the use of computer-aided engineering (CAE) software to model and analyze metal forming processes such as stamping, forging, rolling, or extrusion. These simulations help engineers predict material behavior, identify potential defects, and optimize tool design before physical production begins. By using metal forming simulation, manufacturers can reduce prototyping costs, improve product quality, and minimize waste. It plays a crucial role in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing where precise metal shaping is required.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in Metal Forming Simulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Metal Forming Simulation often encounter challenges such as inaccuracies in material modeling, complex geometry handling, and ensuring simulation results match real-world outcomes. Addressing these issues typically involves staying updated with the latest simulation software, collaborating closely with design and manufacturing teams, and validating simulations with experimental data. Developing strong problem-solving skills and continuously learning about new materials and forming technologies can also help overcome these common hurdles.

Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer (SolidWorks)

Job Description

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with advanced SolidWorks expertise to lead the design, development, and documentation of complex mechanical components and systems. In this role, you will own projects from concept through production, create high-quality 3D models and detailed engineering drawings, and develop accurate bills of materials to support manufacturing and procurement. You will collaborate closely with a cross-functional engineering and production team, contribute to new product introduction initiatives, and help mentor junior engineers in a fast-growing, hands-on environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using SolidWorks, ensuring that all designs meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Create, update, and review 3D models, 2D drawings, and detailed bills of materials (BOMs) to support engineering, production, and procurement activities.
  • Utilize advanced SolidWorks features such as sheet metal, weldments, surfacing, and simulation tools to develop robust, production-ready designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality, and engineering, to translate product requirements into practical, production-ready solutions.
  • Support new product introduction efforts by driving designs from concept through prototyping, validation, and release to production.
  • Maintain and manage CAD documentation, including drawing revisions, file structures, templates, and Product Data Management (PDM) systems to ensure data integrity and consistency.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and complete BOMs and related documentation to facilitate efficient production planning and material procurement.
  • Participate in and support root cause analysis and corrective action activities, with a strong focus on design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Troubleshoot design-related issues involving tolerances, dimensional stack-ups, drawings, or production challenges, and implement effective design improvements.
  • Assist with prototype builds, including preparing documentation, supporting assembly, and incorporating feedback into design iterations.
  • Create, process, and manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and contribute to overall product lifecycle management activities.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable standards, internal engineering requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for design and process improvements, supporting continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing.

Essential Skills (Must haves)

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical design engineering or a closely related role.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, including 3D modeling and 2D drafting for complex mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Proven experience creating and managing detailed bills of materials (BOMs) to support production and procurement.
  • Hands-on experience supporting new product introduction, taking designs from concept through prototyping and into production.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturability, and practical application in a production environment.
  • Ability to read, create, and interpret detailed engineering drawings, including tolerances and geometric dimensioning.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or production-oriented environment and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot design issues and support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a small, fast-paced engineering team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications (Nice to haves)

  • Experience with HVAC or refrigeration systems and their mechanical components.
  • Experience in sheet metal design using SolidWorks, including forming, bending, and fabrication considerations.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement initiatives and methodologies within engineering or manufacturing settings.
  • Hands-on experience supporting prototype builds and incorporating feedback into design refinements.
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis tools and structured problem-solving approaches.
  • Experience creating, processing, and managing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and working within a product lifecycle management framework.
  • Comfort working in a rapidly growing organization where processes and systems are evolving.
  • Interest in mentoring or supporting junior engineers in CAD best practices and design standards.

Work Environment

This is a fully onsite role in a dedicated engineering space where you will work closely with a small but rapidly growing engineering team. The current team consists of approximately six engineers who collaborate daily and regularly interact with the production floor to support manufacturing activities and new product introduction. The environment is highly collaborative and hands-on, with frequent communication between engineering, quality, and production. The facility is newly expanded and designed to support continued growth and increased sales. A daily lunch is provided, including options such as a salad bar and cold cut bar. Typical hours are approximately 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and most team members work around 45 to 50 hours per week, reflecting a culture of strong engagement and shared commitment to project success.
