Job description

Forge Development Engineer (Mechanical Design Engineer)

Position Summary

The Forge Development Engineer will perform a variety of complex work designing optimal metal shaping solutions for Scot Forge’s diverse customer base. This position requires the utmost of creativity, self-discipline, and ability to communicate and interact with manufacturing, sales, and our customers. The Forge Development Team (FDT) is essential to Scot Forge’s business and technological development and works directly with sales and operations to assist them in quoting and developing the manufacturing options that provide best value to our customers. It is FDT’s responsibility to work closely with the crew on the shop floor during the design and development to achieve quality, productivity, problem solving and continuous improvement.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Design and Manufacturing

  • Designing and manufacturing components for critical applications in fast paced high mix low volume production environment.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts in various departments to ensure successful design and development of manufacturing processes.
  • Optimization of design for manufacturability and achieving high First Pass Yield (FPY) on complex jobs.
  • Ability to handle controlled or confidential documents, protecting the intellectual property of both Scot Forge and our customers.

Finite Element Analysis

  • Run simulations and understanding of the concept of Finite Element Analysis (Large scale plastic deformation, Stress analysis, heat transfer, fluid mechanics etc.)
  • Verification and validation of simulated vs actual results for continuous improvement and accuracy of designs
  • Interpret stress analysis models and understanding about the state of stress and applicability for the specific situation in the manufacturing process
  • Derive (back-calculate Finite Element Method (FEM) inputs using experimentation and through data collection from real life manufacturing processes.

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Completed Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering / Technology (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate) or related discipline
  • 5 or more years of related experience in metals/materials manufacturing industry
  • SOLIDWORKS experience or experience with similar CAD software in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) environment.
  • Ability to model complex 3D parts and assemblies
  • Expertise in Tool and Die Design, release, and management of tool drawings.
  • Blueprint reading and digitizing, GD&T analysis, interpretation of Manufacturing specifications
  • Working knowledge of metal forming processes and expertise in any specific area(s) of metal forming is preferred (Forging, Ring Rolling, Welding / Fabrication, Additive Manufacturing, Casting etc.)
  • Functional knowledge of Heat Treatment process / Metal removal techniques / NDT
  • Highly Proficient in MS Office / Excel / PowerPoint / Project

Functional Skills:

  • Highly creative, adaptable, strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Presentation skills, presenting ideas and concepts to internal and external customers,
  • Project Management, ability to work independently or as part of a team or lead teams as situation demands.

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to customize simulation software for optimization, automation and for development of new capabilities
  • Forging Industry Experience/Expertise

Additional Information:

  • Scot Forge requires all employees to work 100% onsite.
  • This position is primarily located in our Spring Grove, IL facility.
  • Occasional travel to customer facilities and to plants in other locations as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Position requires a mixture of working in office and occasionally working in production areas while forklifts, overhead cranes and related equipment are in use. On occasion while performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to heat and cold weather conditions as well as wet and/or humid conditions. Production environment may expose individual to excessive loud noise. When in the area of production, appropriate PPE is mandatory.

The estimated pay range for this position is the lowest and highest range we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We ultimately may pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. The actual pay offered to a candidate will depend on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, qualifications, education, certifications, seniority, geographic location and prevailing minimum wage, performance, shift, travel requirements, and business or organizational needs.
