Metadata Archivist information

What is a metadata archivist?

Metadata archivists are information professionals who specialize in organizing, describing, and preserving digital and physical records by creating and managing metadata. Metadata is structured information that describes, explains, locates, or makes it easier to retrieve, use, or manage an information resource. Metadata archivists work in libraries, museums, archives, and other organizations to ensure that materials are discoverable and accessible over time. They often collaborate with other archivists, librarians, and IT professionals to implement metadata standards and maintain data integrity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metadata archivist?

To thrive as a Metadata Archivist, you need expertise in archival science, metadata standards (such as Dublin Core or MARC), and information management, typically backed by a relevant degree in library or information science. Familiarity with digital asset management systems (DAMS), cataloging software, and metadata schema tools is common, and certifications like Certified Archivist can be advantageous. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate data organization, accessibility, and preservation, which are critical for supporting research and institutional knowledge management.

How does a metadata archivist typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Metadata Archivists regularly work with teams such as digital asset management, IT, curators, and researchers to ensure that metadata accurately reflects the content and context of archived materials. They often coordinate with these departments to establish metadata standards and workflows, troubleshoot data inconsistencies, and support accessibility and discoverability of digital collections. Effective communication and collaboration are crucial, as Metadata Archivists serve as a bridge between technical systems and content experts, ensuring organizational needs are met and archival best practices are maintained.

Job description

About THUMBWAR
THUMBWAR is a technical solutions company that combines the talents of our diverse staff, our inventory of equipment, and the experience of over fifteen years in business to produce unique solutions to solve our clients needs.
We work with broadcast networks to design and execute live broadcast workflows, with an emphasis on remote work and hybrid workflows.
We work with content providers to enable workflows that leverage content aggregation to create engaging programming for platforms such as web and mobile during marquee events.
We work with large companies and institutions where we have integrated large-scale storage and archive environments and remain trusted partners after the initial installation for on-going support and maintenance. We do this by providing consulting, on-going support, and turnkey IT infrastructure design and deployment.
Our team, our clients, and our projects may be diverse, but at the core is a cohesive understanding of our customers' needs and how THUMBWAR's unique perspective and skillset can address them.
Senior Media Manager / Media Asset Manager
More About THUMBWAR
THUMBWAR builds and deploys advanced capture and media systems used by global brands, studios, and technology partners. Our equipment travels to live productions, engineering environments, and client installations where precision, readiness, and reliability are non-negotiable. Logistics is mission-critical infrastructure-at THUMBWAR, logistics isn't a back-office function; it is the heartbeat of our global deployments. When logistics works, our technology changes the way the world sees media. The base salary for this role is up to $75,000 / year. Final compensation will be determined by factors such as the candidate's experience and skills.
The Opportunity
In the world of live broadcast, every second counts and every frame matters. At THUMBWAR, we don't just manage media; we power the workflows that bring world-class content to life. We are looking for a Senior Media Manager who thrives in the "controlled chaos" of live events - a leader who views Media Asset Management as a high-stakes chess match where organization, speed, and technical precision are the winning moves.
If you are a MAM expert who wants to move away from the static archives and into the heart of live production, this is your arena.
Key Responsibilities
Command Live Workflows: Lead daily MAM operations with a focus on live event support, ensuring that media is ingested, logged, and moved through the pipeline with zero friction.
Architect Collaboration: Serve as the primary bridge between clients, production teams, and engineering to ensure metadata accuracy and asset availability during high-pressure broadcasts.
Build the "Dream Team": Mentor and develop a high-performing MAM team. You aren't just a manager; you're a coach setting the standard for technical excellence.
Drive System Evolution: Partner with the Engineering team to stress-test, maintain, and upgrade our media infrastructure, ensuring our tech stack stays ahead of industry demands.
Workflow Documentation: Author the "Playbook." Create and maintain the technical documentation and training guides that keep our operations scalable and consistent.
Strategic Project Leadership: Oversee special projects aimed at operational enhancements - turning "how we do it" into "how it's done better."
The Ideal Candidate
You aren't just a librarian for digital files; you are a workflow strategist.
You are Unflappable: When a live feed is active and the pressure is on, you remain the calmest person in the room.
You are a Tech Polymath: You understand the "why" behind the "how," whether it's a code issue, a metadata bottleneck, or a cloud sync error.
You are Client-Obsessed: You understand that our success is defined by our clients' ability to find and use their media instantly.
You are a Process Optimizer: You have a "continuous improvement" mindset, constantly looking for ways to shave seconds off a workflow or add depth to a database.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Broadcast, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience in Media Asset Management (MAM) and 5+ years in a technical broadcast or digital media environment.
• Deep expertise in the content lifecycle - from camera capture and ingest to archive and distribution.
• Proven experience navigating the fast-paced, high-pressure environments typical of live sports, news, or entertainment.
• Mastery of MAM software, digital delivery tools, and a strong understanding of server/storage infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
Project Leadership: Experience managing technical projects or system migrations.
Advanced Tools: Familiarity with AI-driven tagging, automated QC workflows, or cloud-native MAM solutions
Local Advantage: Strong ties to the Los Angeles media production community
Why Join THUMBWAR
We operate at the intersection of digital broadcast and digital innovation. Joining THUMBWAR means you aren't just another cog in a corporate machine - you are a key architect of the infrastructure that support the world's most-watched live events. We offer the chance to lead a team that is as passionate about the technology as they are about the content.
Are you ready to own the workflow? Let's talk.
