What is a MES manager?

A MES Manager oversees the implementation, operation, and maintenance of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) within a manufacturing organization. They are responsible for ensuring the MES effectively connects, monitors, and controls complex manufacturing processes on the shop floor. The role involves coordinating between IT and production teams, optimizing system performance, managing upgrades, and ensuring data integrity. MES Managers play a key role in streamlining production, improving efficiency, and supporting digital transformation in manufacturing environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MES manager?

To thrive as a MES Manager, you need expertise in manufacturing processes, IT systems integration, and project management, usually supported by a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with MES platforms (such as Siemens SIMATIC IT, Rockwell FactoryTalk, or Wonderware), database management, and relevant certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across departments and drive system adoption. These skills are crucial for optimizing production efficiency, ensuring data accuracy, and successfully leading MES implementation or improvement projects.

How does a MES manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth production workflows?

An MES Manager works closely with production, IT, quality assurance, and engineering teams to integrate manufacturing execution systems with existing processes. They facilitate communication between departments by translating business needs into technical requirements and ensuring MES solutions support operational goals. Regular cross-functional meetings, process mapping, and continuous feedback loops are common practices to identify bottlenecks and implement improvements. This collaborative approach helps maintain production efficiency and ensures that system changes align with overall business objectives.

What is the difference between Mes Manager vs Manufacturing Supervisor?

AspectMes ManagerManufacturing Supervisor

The successful candidate will actively support integrations, Manufacturing Bills of Material (BOMs), routings, work centers, work instructions, and dashboards, whileย maintainingย MES solutions tailored to business requirements and manufacturing processes. This role partners closely with engineering, operations, and quality teams to translate real-world manufacturing needs into robust, user-friendly Tulip solutions that enable scalability and efficiency.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

  • Develop, configure, andย maintainย Tulip MES applications (apps, connectors, triggers, dashboards) to support production workflows, digital work instructions, traceability, and "as-built" history.ย
  • Administer Tulip environments, including user and role management, system configuration, and integration with ERP, PLM, and shop floor devices (barcode/RFID, test stations, Edge IO).ย
  • Design andย maintainย dashboards, reports, and data tools to provide visibility into KPIs, compliance metrics, and production status.ย
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to capture requirements, translate them into technical designs, perform testing, and support UAT and production rollout.ย
  • Document system designs, configurations, and standard work;ย establishย auditing and change control processes for engineering changes and releases.ย
  • Monitor and resolve data synchronization issues across CAD, PLM, ERP, and MES; implement systemic rules and automation to improve data quality and user experience.ย
  • Serve as the primary Jira support contact for MES/Tulip requests; manage ticket triage, tracking, and reporting to Manufacturing and IT leadership.ย
  • Mentor and train engineers and technicians on Tulip concepts, app usage, and best practices; drive continuous improvement initiatives on the shop floor.ย
  • Ensure compliance with data integrity, cybersecurity, and system validation standards.ย
  • Assistย with license usage optimization and cost control for MES tools.ย

Required Qualificationsย

  • Minimum 4 years of experience administering, configuring, and developing Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), including at least 2 years of hands-on Tulip experience (app building, connectors, triggers, dashboards).ย
  • Strong knowledge of ERP and PLM integrations, shop floor devices (PCs, scanners, RFID), and product lifecycle management; prior experience with CAD, PLM, and ERP systems preferred.ย
  • Proficiencyย in SQL and at least one programming language (Java, Python, or C-family languages); database development skills a plus.ย
  • Demonstrated ability to gather requirements, create technical solution designs, perform testing (including UAT), and deliver production-ready implementations.ย
  • Experience with change management, bill of materials, routings, and document control processes.ย
  • Skilled in MS Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, MS Project) and capable of working across multiple web platforms.ย
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in fast-paced, cross-functional teams; leadership experience preferred.ย
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.ย

Preferred Qualificationsย
