Job description

Senior Platform Infrastructure Engineer

Merlin is a venture backed aerospace startup building a non-human pilot to enable both reduced crew and uncrewed flight. Backed by some of the world's leading investors, Merlin is scaling alongside our customers to begin leveraging autonomy today to solve some of aviation's biggest challenges.

We are seeking a Senior Platform Infrastructure Engineer to design and operate the compute and virtualization backbone that supports HIL, AIR, and SIL environments. This role owns the implementation and operational stability of the simulation execution substrate including hypervisors, virtual machines, containerization, CI pipelines, and artifact management.

Responsibilities

Simulation Compute Architecture
  • Design and manage high-performance compute infrastructure (e.g., Proxmox or equivalent hypervisor environments)
  • Define VM topology standards for virtual test environments
  • Implement reproducible image and deployment strategies
CI/CD & Automation
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for simulation artifacts
  • Ensure deterministic and traceable builds for runtime models and routing software
  • Automate deployment into SIL and HIL environments
Configuration & Version Discipline
  • Implement artifact versioning and compatibility tracking
  • Maintain structured configuration management across aircraft variants
  • Partner with Simulation Platform engineers to enforce schema and interface validation
Reliability & Observability
  • Implement logging, monitoring, and system health visibility for simulation environments
  • Improve toolchain reliability and reduce infrastructure-related breakage

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering
  • Experience designing virtualization or container-based execution environments
  • Strong proficiency in Linux systems, Python, and/or C++
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines in engineering-heavy environments
  • Experience working with distributed or multi-component systems

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting simulation or autonomy validation environments
  • Familiarity with HIL/SIL environments
  • Experience in safety-critical or regulated industries

This position is based on-site at Merlin HQ in Boston, MA.
