Located in the Phoenix, Ariz., suburb of Gilbert, the Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, is a 198-bed, not-for profit hospital with more than 1,300 team members and almost 900 doctors on staff representing all major specialties. In 2014, Phoenix Children's Hospital launched a 22-bed pediatric unit inside the hospital. Mercy Gilbert opened in 2006 and has been a vital part of the growing community. Today it is the fifth largest employer in Gilbert. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, Mercy Gilbert provided more than $24 million in community benefit. As a result of Dignity Health's mission to deliver health care and partner with the community, more than 42,000 people in the East Valley were reached through community health services. Job Summary and Responsibilities
The Neuroscience Nurse Practitioner is responsible for delivering care to patients admitted to Neurosurgery/Trauma at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.
  • Provides patient care within the scope of practice as set forth by the Arizona State Board of Nursing
  • Obtains medical history, performs physical examinations, formulates differential diagnosis and establishes a treatment plan in collaboration with the treating physician and nursing staff.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and other diagnostic tests within scope of practice.
  • Writes orders and prescribes medications, including controlled substances.
  • Instructs and counsels patients and their family regarding the diagnosis, treatment plan and medications.
  • Makes referrals to ancillary departments and outside agencies.
  • Formulates discharge plan and works in collaboration with case management to ensure safe, timely discharge. Writes discharge prescriptions and educates patients on medications.
  • Completes hospital and department documentation legibly, accurately and within designated timeframe.
  • Works in collaboration with sponsoring physician, case management and staff nurses to provide patient care.
  • Complies with legal restrictions regarding lines of authority, supervision and communication.
  • Acts as a liaison between physicians, nursing departments, ancillary staff on behalf of patients and their families.
  • Ensures that all care is consistent with current evidence-based practice.
  • Provides patient/family education in coordination with nursing staff.
