Position Overview

The University Club of Memphis is seeking a Retail Merchandiser & Shop Supervisor to lead and elevate our Tennis Shop retail operation. This is a working supervisor role that combines hands-on shop coverage with responsibility for merchandising, inventory management, vendor coordination, and retail standards.

The ideal candidate has strong retail instincts, enjoys being on the floor with members, and brings both taste and discipline to a specialty retail environment. This role works alongside a long-tenured shop attendant and serves as the primary point of accountability for the retail space.

Key Responsibilities

Retail Operations & Supervision

  • Work scheduled shifts in the Tennis Shop as part of full-time coverage
  • Serve as the on-site lead for the retail space during assigned hours
  • Provide daily direction and support to shop attendant(s)
  • Ensure consistent customer service, professionalism, and member experience
  • Maintain opening/closing procedures and operational standards

Merchandising & Buying

  • Curate seasonal assortments of apparel, accessories, and logo merchandise
  • Plan and execute seasonal refreshes, capsule collections, and event-based merchandise
  • Maintain a cohesive merchandising point of view aligned with Club culture and membership
  • Coordinate buys, deliveries, and reorders with approved vendors

Inventory & Financial Management

  • Monitor inventory levels, sell-through, and aging product
  • Recommend markdowns or merchandising strategies for slow-moving inventory
  • Coordinate receiving, tagging, and inventory entry
  • Maintain discipline around margins, inventory turns, and presentation

Visual Merchandising & Presentation

  • Ensure the shop is consistently clean, organized, and visually compelling
  • Execute floor resets and display updates
  • Establish merchandising standards that can be maintained daily

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with the Director of Racquets on programming and retail alignment
  • Coordinate with Club management on pricing, promotions, and brand standards
  • Support tournaments, events, and special retail initiatives as needed

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in retail merchandising, buying, or specialty apparel retail
  • Experience supervising or leading staff in a retail or service environment
  • Strong visual merchandising skills and attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of retail fundamentals (margin, sell-through, inventory turns)
  • Comfortable working independently with clear expectations and accountability
  • Tennis, athletic, or lifestyle retail experience preferred

Schedule & Compensation

  • Full-time position with a mix of shop coverage, merchandising responsibilities, and racquets billing
  • Weekend and event coverage required
