The Assistant Director of Store Operations partners with the Director of Store Operations to lead daily store operations, team performance, and guest service. Serving as the store’s second-in-command, this role helps maintain high standards across every department, supports financial and operational goals, and builds a positive, accountable workplace culture. The Assistant Director of Store Operations also steps in as the acting store leader when the Director of Store Operations is unavailable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Store Operations
    • Support daily operations across all departments, including Deli, Produce, Meat, Seafood, Grocery, Bakery, Kitchen, Prepared Foods, Pizza, Wine & Cheese, and Front End
    • Help maintain operational efficiency, cleanliness, consistency, and store readiness
    • Conduct store walkthroughs to monitor merchandising, freshness, sanitation, and presentation standards
    • Complete opening and closing responsibilities while ensuring store safety and security
    • Serve as acting store leader in the absence of the Director of Store Operations
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Assist in leading department managers and supporting their teams
    • Provide coaching, feedback, and guidance to promote a productive, guest-focused culture
    • Support recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and employee development of team members
    • Monitor attendance, performance, and workplace expectations
    • Assist with performance discussions and corrective action when necessary
  • Financial Performance
    • Monitor sales, labor, shrink, inventory, and other key performance measures
    • Support employee scheduling, payroll preparation, and budget compliance
    • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, control expenses, and reduce waste
  • Guest Experience
    • Lead by example in providing exceptional service and hospitality
    • Address guest questions and concerns promptly and professionally
    • Support sampling, promotional events, and guest engagement programs
  • Merchandising & Standards
    • Support merchandising plans, promotional displays, and seasonal resets
    • Partner with department teams to maintain fresh, fully stocked, and visually appealing displays
    • Ensure product rotation, pricing, signage, and labeling standards are followed
  • Compliance & Safety
    • Support compliance with food safety, OSHA, labor, and company requirements
    • Assist with inspections, audits, and required documentation
    • Reinforce loss prevention, workplace safety, and emergency procedures
  • Communication & Collaboration
    • Maintain clear communication between store leadership and department teams
    • Communicate company priorities, procedures, and operational updates
    • Partner with HR, Marketing, Merchandising, and Operations on storewide initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or assistant management experience in grocery, food retail, or hospitality
  • Strong knowledge of retail operations, customer service, and team leadership
  • Ability to coach, motivate, and hold employees accountable in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with labor scheduling, payroll, inventory, or expense management
  • Strong communication, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • ServSafe Manager Certification or ability to obtain
  • Flexible availability, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

Physical & Work Environment

This position is performed in a fast-paced retail grocery environment and requires frequent walking throughout the store, standing for extended periods, and regularly working alongside employees and guests. The Assistant Director of Store Operations works across multiple departments and must be comfortable in refrigerated, freezer, kitchen, receiving, and outdoor areas. Bending, reaching, lifting, and moving products or equipment may be required throughout the shift.
