Position Description
SUMMARY
This MEP Coordinator customarily starts work on a project near the beginning when drawings are first submitted by the owner/architect for conceptual estimating and continues until the end when MEP system commissioning and closeout is complete. They provide technical support to the project for the design, coordination, procurement, installation verification, quality control, function and jurisdiction approvals of the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, conveying, utilities, controls, technology, specialty equipment, and life/safety systems. They review and coordinate the submittals, shop drawings, installations, startup, and third-party commissioning to meet the requirements of the project, basis of design, contract documents, and schedule.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Support constructability reviews of the design and compliance with state and local codes.
  2. Determine the scope of the project, materials to be utilized, and manpower requirements for each construction phase.
  3. Attend weekly meetings with owners, architects, and subcontractors; outline work performed by MEP subcontractors, phasing, scheduling issues, and quality concerns. Hold separate meetings with MEP subcontractors as necessary.
  4. Serve as a technical resource in meetings with owners and architects; discuss MEP systems in technical terms and explain anticipated challenges and solutions.
  5. Ensure all MEP submittals and shop drawings are submitted timely and reviewed for completeness.
  6. BIM: Use BIM and CAD programs to coordinate design and shop drawings, identify space issues, review drawings between subcontractors, integrate design and construction models, manage model setup and quality, coordinate file sharing, supplemental models, clash detection, reporting, and issue resolution.
  7. Mechanical & Plumbing: Review shop drawings for piping routes and dimensions; inspect underground piping, solder connections, flanges, and ensure heavy pipe and mechanical equipment are installed prior to wall pours.
  8. Sheet Metal: Review shop drawings for code compliance; coordinate ceiling space, duct routing, diffusers, lighting, sprinklers, and fire dampers.
  9. Insulation: Inspect installation of piping insulation, vapor barriers, heat tracing, and freeze protection.
  10. Electrical: Review shop drawings for raceways, switchgear, risers, generators; inspect work in progress; coordinate with city electrical inspectors; resolve issues with architects and subcontractors.
  11. Fire Sprinkler Systems: Coordinate early with fire department inspectors; review shop drawings; coordinate tamper and flow switches; inspect work for quality and code compliance.
  12. Life Safety Systems: Inspect and coordinate installation of fire alarm systems, smoke control, pressurization systems, fire command centers, emergency communications, egress signage, and fire extinguishers.
  13. Startup and Commissioning: Conduct startup meetings with trade partners and support third-party commissioning activities.
  14. Collaborate with the Project Superintendent to review subcontractor plans, schedules, manpower, methods, and resolve drawing ambiguities prior to construction.
  15. Provide technical guidance to resolve day-to-day construction issues.
  16. Assist the Project Manager with estimating and reviewing change orders, evaluating cost impacts, and proposing alternative methods to meet project goals.
  17. Review subcontractor pay requests for accuracy and timeliness and assist with payment issue resolution.
  18. Assist the Superintendent with field inspections, ensure high-quality workmanship, identify deficiencies, attend foreman meetings, and participate in job walks.

Position Requirements
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
When applicable, manage, train, and mentor Project Engineers and other team members for document control, project administration, BIM coordination, technical support, and MEP system knowledge.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in project engineering, BIM coordination, or MEP project management
  • Detail-oriented team player capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Excellent communication, listening, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient computer skills and enterprise software competency
  • Strong understanding of cost control, budgeting, and forecasting
  • High ethical standards and strong work ethic

Education:
4-year engineering degree or equivalent related experience, plus knowledge of construction, design, finance, and management.
