The Role

Design Specialist I – Mechanical Engineering (MEP) is a senior-level role responsible for developing, managing, and coordinating complex mechanical system designs and construction documentation for building and infrastructure projects. This role leads mechanical BIM/CAD efforts, ensures alignment with engineering calculations and design intent, and supports multi-disciplinary coordination across MEP and architectural teams. The position requires independent execution of advanced modeling tasks, close collaboration with mechanical engineers, and mentorship of junior designers to deliver high-quality, code-compliant mechanical system documents.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed mechanical 2D and 3D CAD/BIM models (e.g., HVAC systems, ductwork layouts, piping systems, equipment schedules, and details) aligned with engineering calculations and specifications.
  • Lead coordination across MEP disciplines, ensuring mechanical systems integrate seamlessly with electrical, plumbing, architectural, and structural models without clashes.
  • Perform and oversee quality control reviews of mechanical drawings and models, verifying accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable building codes, energy standards, and project requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers to translate load calculations, system sizing, airflow design, and equipment selections into accurate, constructible documents.
  • Mentor junior designers on mechanical drafting standards, HVAC/piping detailing best practices, and BIM/CAD workflows.
  • Generate and manage mechanical construction documents, including general notes, equipment schedules, riser diagrams, and detailed system layouts.
  • Support shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and design revisions by incorporating engineering updates into BIM/CAD models and drawing sets.
  • Establish and maintain mechanical BIM standards, including model organization, naming conventions, and level of development (LOD).
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving complex modeling or coordination issues, while identifying process improvements for MEP BIM workflows.
  • Prepare 3D visualizations, system diagrams, and coordination views for constructability reviews, internal coordination meetings, and client presentations.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate’s degree or certification in CAD, BIM, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • 4–6 years of experience in CAD/BIM design with a focus on mechanical or MEP systems within building projects.
  • Demonstrated experience producing mechanical construction documents and coordinating with engineering and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in MEP-focused design tools (e.g., Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Navisworks) and familiarity with applicable building and energy codes.
