What is an MEP Electrical Design Engineer?

MEP Electrical Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing the electrical systems within buildings as part of the broader Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering discipline. They are responsible for planning and designing power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, and other electrical systems to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with building codes. Their work involves creating detailed electrical drawings, coordinating with other engineering disciplines, and often overseeing the installation process on construction sites. MEP Electrical Design Engineers play a crucial role in making sure that building electrical systems are reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP Electrical Design Engineer?

To thrive as an MEP Electrical Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, building codes, and relevant standards, typically backed by a degree in electrical engineering and professional licensure (such as EIT or PE). Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, and electrical load calculation software is commonly required, along with familiarity with BIM processes. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top candidates apart in this collaborative, project-driven field. These skills ensure safe, code-compliant, and efficient electrical system designs that meet client and project requirements.

What are some typical challenges MEP Electrical Design Engineers face when coordinating with other disciplines on a project?

MEP Electrical Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating their designs with mechanical and plumbing systems, as well as architectural constraints. Effective communication and regular coordination meetings are essential to resolve clashes, especially regarding space allocation for electrical conduits and equipment. Additionally, adapting to late-stage design changes from other teams can require quick adjustments and creative problem-solving to maintain compliance with codes and project timelines. Collaboration tools and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software are commonly used to streamline this process and minimize errors.

Job description

Job Description:

This role provides technical services in support of a comprehensive Power Resiliency program within a sustainability and automation-focused department. The Electrical Design Engineer I concentrates on the planning, design, commissioning, and operational support of electrical infrastructure, backup power systems, and energy resiliency solutions across a large distribution network, with particular focus on NACF and NASC facilities. The position plays a key part in developing processes, documentation, and tools that enhance power reliability during both planned and unplanned events.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning, design, commissioning, and operational support of electrical infrastructure, backup power systems, and energy resiliency solutions across the distribution network, with a specific focus on NACF and NASC sites.
  • Assist in developing site-specific backup generation implementation plans, known as playbooks, involving internal teams, contractors, and utilities.
  • Gather and validate site-specific technical information for playbooks, including engineering drawings, single-line diagrams, and equipment specifications from internal resources.
  • Establish and maintain active points of contact for sites, contractors, and utilities, ensuring effective communication and coordination.
  • Coordinate with site leadership, including reliability and maintenance engineering and operations personnel, to facilitate visits, equipment availability, and access to restricted areas as required.
  • Support the ramp-up of planned backup power generation processes for AMZL, NACF, NASC, or combinations of business units, covering planning, deployment, and operation of generation assets.
  • Develop and steward software systems and internal tools to manage data, track initiatives and assets, and report issues related to power resiliency.
  • Communicate status, risks, and blockers to relevant stakeholders in real time, especially during major events such as peak seasons and significant weather events.
  • Assist in executing power resiliency plans and processes during major events, including summer and winter storm seasons and other high-impact periods.
  • Support unplanned backup power generation needs by coordinating efforts to bring generation assets to a site or make onsite backup generation operable.
  • Coordinate with internal personnel, contractors, and utilities for the staging and deployment of generation assets as directed by leadership.
  • Provide administrative support for ongoing process development related to both planned and unplanned power resiliency events.
  • Contribute to documentation and reporting by providing inputs to tracking and reporting software, and assisting in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Use internal tools to obtain information, log issues, and report problems, ensuring accurate and timely data entry.
  • Collaborate with external vendors to obtain required technical information and documentation for power resiliency initiatives.
  • Analyze data to support the development of white papers and other leadership-focused deliverables that inform executive decision-making.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and utility providers to secure permissions and information related to site visits, equipment access, and technical specifications.
  • Assist with resolving administrative matters related to requisitions and purchase orders, ensuring alignment with approved scopes of work.
  • Operate strictly within administrative and technical support boundaries, without directly supervising employees or contractors, approving financial commitments, or accessing customer data or PII without explicit security clearance.

Skills:

  • Strong foundation in electrical engineering with experience in electrical design for power systems and infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience within the utility industry, including familiarity with utility operations and power distribution networks (utility experience is a must).
  • Experience with backup power systems, including planning, deployment, commissioning, and operational support.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work with engineering drawings, single-line diagrams, and equipment specifications.
  • Competence in developing and using software systems and internal tools to manage data, track assets, and monitor initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records, contact lists, and documentation for multiple sites and stakeholders.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with site leadership, contractors, vendors, and utility providers and to convey status, risks, and blockers in real time.
  • Ability to support process development, including drafting and refining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other process documentation.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate technical and operational data and contribute to reports and white papers for leadership.
  • Capability to work within defined administrative boundaries, respecting limitations related to supervision, financial approvals, and data access.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

  • Educational in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on power resiliency, sustainability, or automation initiatives in large, complex distribution networks.
  • Familiarity with NACF, NASC, or similar facility types and their operational requirements for electrical infrastructure and backup power.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including reliability and maintenance engineering, operations, contractors, and utilities.
  • Comfort with developing and refining processes for both planned and unplanned backup power generation events.
  • Experience interacting with external vendors and contractors to obtain technical information, coordinate site access, and manage administrative documentation.
  • Ability to contribute to leadership-facing deliverables, such as white papers and executive summaries, based on technical and operational analysis.

Work Environment:

This position is based onsite in an Atlanta office environment and supports a broad distribution network with NACF and NASC facilities. Work involves frequent coordination with site personnel, contractors, vendors, and utility providers, and may require occasional visits to operational sites to support power resiliency initiatives.
