Menu Analyst information

What is a menu analyst?

A Menu Analyst is a professional responsible for evaluating and optimizing restaurant or food service menus. They analyze sales data, food costs, and customer preferences to recommend changes that improve profitability and customer satisfaction. Menu Analysts work closely with chefs, marketing teams, and management to ensure the menu aligns with brand goals and market trends. Their work often involves pricing strategies, menu design, and the introduction or removal of menu items.

How does a menu analyst typically collaborate with chefs and marketing teams to optimize menu offerings?

Menu Analysts regularly work alongside chefs to analyze dish performance, cost structures, and ingredient utilization, ensuring that menu items are both profitable and aligned with culinary trends. They also partner with marketing teams to assess customer feedback and market data, helping to design menus that attract target demographics and drive sales. Effective communication and data-driven insights are key to bridging the gap between culinary creativity and business objectives, making collaboration a central part of the Menu Analyst's role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a menu analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Menu Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a background in food service or hospitality, and a solid understanding of cost control and menu engineering principles. Familiarity with menu management software, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and proficiency in Excel or data visualization tools is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with culinary and operations teams are valuable soft skills. These capabilities are crucial for optimizing menu offerings, maximizing profitability, and ensuring alignment with customer preferences and business goals.

About The Opportunity
The Wonder Sourcing team is looking for a motivated and analytical Sourcing Analyst to join our food procurement team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional (0-2 years' experience) to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced commercial environment. You'll support the sourcing function with data analysis and financial modeling, and take on responsibility for a small product category-assisting in sourcing new products, negotiating pricing, and managing category-level cost performance.
The Impact You Will Make
Data & Financial Analysis:
  • Support the creation of pricing models and cost trackers to help monitor category performance and supplier pricing.
  • Analyze procurement and sales data to identify trends, cost changes, and margin opportunities.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations for internal stakeholders and supplier reviews.
  • Contribute to budgeting and forecasting by compiling and interpreting data from internal systems and market sources.
  • Track commodity and market trends to support commercial planning and risk analysis.

Buying Support:
  • Assist in managing a small product category within the food portfolio.
  • Help identify new product opportunities and support initial sourcing activities.
  • Liaise with suppliers to gather pricing, lead time, and specification information.
  • Support basic pricing negotiations under guidance, contributing to value and margin goals.
  • Assist in managing the cost of goods sold (COGS) budget for your category, including updating internal tools and flagging cost changes.
  • Work cross-functionally with NPD, Technical, and Quality Assurance teams to help onboard new products and suppliers.
  • Maintain accurate records of supplier and product data within procurement systems.

What You Bring to the Table
  • 0-2 years of experience in a supply chain, procurement, or buying role-internships or placements within the food or FMCG industry are a plus.
  • Strong Excel skills, with the ability to work with data sets, use formulas, and create basic models.
  • Interest in pricing, supplier management, and commercial decision-making.
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to work with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Proactive, curious, and eager to learn about food sourcing, cost structures, and supply chain operations.

Our hybrid model requires 3 days a week in the office. That said, many team members choose to come in more often to take advantage of in-person collaboration and connection. You're welcome-and encouraged-to be in the office up to 5 days a week if it works for you.
New York/New Jersey: $96,000 - $102,000 per year.
