Job description

Company Description

The VFW National Home supports military service members, veterans, and their families with children by providing comprehensive services and resources that help them reach personal and family goals. The organization focuses on creating a positive, safe, and healthy environment where families can stabilize and thrive. Through coordinated programs and community support, the National Home addresses both immediate needs and long-term well-being. Team members join a mission-driven organization committed to improving quality of life for those who have served and their families.

Position Summary

The Veteran Service Officer (VSO) & Membership Coordinator serves as a dual-role professional dedicated to supporting veterans and strengthening the mission of the VFW National Home. This position directly assists veterans and their families by helping them access earned VA benefits, while also leading membership recruitment and retention efforts for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and VFW Auxiliary.

The successful candidate will complete VFW accreditation training to become an accredited Veteran Service Officer and will represent both the VFW National Home and the VFW in the community through outreach, education, and relationship-building. This position requires regular travel, flexible scheduling, and occasional evening and weekend work to accommodate veterans’ needs and community events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete all required VFW accreditation training and maintain accreditation in accordance with VFW National Veterans Service policies.
  • Assist veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors in understanding and applying for federal, state, and local veterans’ benefits.
  • Prepare, review, and submit VA claims and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain confidential client records and case documentation in accordance with applicable laws and organizational policies.
  • Advocate on behalf of veterans throughout the claims and appeals process.
  • Conduct outreach to identify veterans who may be eligible for benefits and services.
  • Educate veterans and community organizations about available benefits and VFW resources.
  • Build collaborative relationships with VA facilities, county veteran service offices, community agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete VFW accreditation training and maintain accreditation.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to establish rapport with veterans and their families while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel, including overnight travel as needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard office technology.

Preferred

  • Prior experience working with veterans, military families, or veteran service organizations.
  • Knowledge of VA benefits, military culture, or veterans’ programs.
  • Experience in membership development, recruiting, fundraising, or community outreach.
  • Experience presenting to groups or leading community engagement initiatives.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel by automobile and other means of transportation.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and participate in community events for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.

Work Environment

This position operates in a combination of office, community, and travel settings. Some travel may be required throughout the service area, with occasional overnight travel.

  • Because veterans often need assistance outside traditional business hours, this position requires a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends to accommodate appointments, outreach events, community meetings, and veteran needs.
