What is a medical surgical tech?

Medical Surgical Techs, also known as Surgical Technologists or Operating Room Technicians, are allied health professionals who assist surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff during surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include preparing operating rooms, sterilizing equipment, ensuring that surgical instruments are ready, and assisting with patient care before, during, and after surgery. They play a critical role in maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring patient safety throughout surgical operations. Medical Surgical Techs work in hospitals, outpatient centers, and other healthcare settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical surgical tech?

To thrive as a Medical Surgical Tech, you need a strong understanding of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and human anatomy, typically supported by a surgical technology diploma or certification (such as CST). Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterilization equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is commonly required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in the operating room.
