What is a medical software engineer?

A medical software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains software applications used in healthcare settings. Their work supports medical devices, hospital information systems, patient management platforms, and diagnostic tools. They collaborate closely with healthcare professionals to ensure the software meets regulatory standards and improves patient care. Medical software engineers must have expertise in both software development and an understanding of healthcare workflows and compliance requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by medical software engineers when developing healthcare applications?

Medical Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations (like HIPAA and FDA guidelines), integrating software with various electronic health record (EHR) systems, and maintaining data security and patient privacy. Additionally, they must work closely with clinicians and non-technical stakeholders to translate complex medical requirements into reliable, user-friendly software solutions. Balancing innovation with the need for rigorous testing and validation is also essential due to the critical nature of healthcare technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Software Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, familiarity with healthcare standards (like HL7 or DICOM), and typically a degree in computer science, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Experience with programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), medical device software regulations (like FDA or ISO 13485), and health information systems is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with clinical teams and ensuring compliance. These competencies are crucial for developing safe, reliable, and compliant medical software that improves patient outcomes and meets regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Medical Software Engineer vs Medical Device Software Engineer?

AspectMedical Software EngineerMedical Device Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in CS, Software Engineering, or related; certifications like CSTE or CSQE beneficialSimilar credentials; often requires knowledge of medical device regulations (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485)
Work EnvironmentHealthcare IT companies, software firms, hospitalsMedical device manufacturers, regulatory environments, clinical settings
Employer & Industry UsageHealthcare software solutions, electronic health records, telemedicineDesign, develop, and test software for medical devices like pacemakers, imaging equipment

The main difference is that Medical Software Engineers focus on healthcare software applications, while Medical Device Software Engineers specialize in software for medical devices. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ in their focus on device regulation and clinical application.

How to break into medical software engineering?

Medical software engineering is a specialized field that requires a strong foundation in software development, knowledge of healthcare regulations, and familiarity with medical data standards like HL7 or DICOM. Gaining experience through relevant internships, obtaining certifications such as Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), and developing skills in programming languages like Java, C++, or Python can improve job prospects. Understanding clinical workflows and working with electronic health record (EHR) systems are also valuable for entering this field.

Job description

About the company

Moab is a seed stage company founded by early employees of Ramp and Uber.

We're funded by a top Bay Area venture firm and a leading industry-focused venture firm.

Moab is building heavy equipment rental and dealer management software with the aim to automate all aspects of running these businesses - including managing inventory, orders, billing, service, repair, dispatch, and accounting.

The equipment dealer and rental market is an integral part of the multi-trillion dollar construction, agriculture, and logistics industries. It is currently under served by antiquated, incumbent software solutions - most of which were incepted in the 1980's and 1990's.

Our ultimate goal is to connect everyone who is selling, buying, renting, servicing, or utilizing equipment. We're starting by building a new system-of-record for equipment rental businesses that will increase back office efficiency and generate additional front office revenue.

The founding team has deep expertise in building and selling B2B SaaS. It's comprised of:

  • Charles Soll (CEO)

  • Patrick Anderson (CTO)

  • Rodda John (Lead Engineer)

About the role

Moab is hiring engineers to build software alongside Patrick Anderson and Rodda John.

Our ideal candidate is highly proficient with their tools - having put them to use over many repetitions, taking the time to understand their depth.

We use Python, Unix, and Postgres to build Moab's backend. Our frontend is built with React.js and TypeScript.

Patrick wrote about his approach to building engineering teams here. Rodda wrote briefly about his approach to building software here and at length here.

Moab engineering will appeal to you if you'd like to work on a team that keeps the tech stack simple, measures their CI/CD time in seconds, has a deeply technical leader, only works on things that move the needle for the business, and ships more than its competitors with a fraction of their headcount. What you'll do
  • Build the reliable, maintainable, and minimal software that comprises our product

  • Collaborate with customers to provide feedback on their proposals and assess feasibility of implementation

  • Lay the foundation of our engineering culture

What you'll need
  • Experience working at a venture backed company

  • Track record of shipping software that balances time to market with reliability

  • Ability to translate a product vision into elegant software abstractions

  • Full-stack experience

Compensation

The annual salary for this role is $150,000 to $200,000 plus equity plus benefits

Benefits (for US based full-time employees)

Medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage
