What is a Medical Imaging Machine Learning job?

A Medical Imaging Machine Learning job involves developing and applying artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to analyze medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Professionals in this field use machine learning models to assist in disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment planning. They work with large medical datasets, optimize deep learning models, and collaborate with radiologists and healthcare professionals to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. The role requires expertise in machine learning, computer vision, and medical imaging technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Medical Imaging Machine Learning position, and why are they important?

To excel in Medical Imaging Machine Learning, a solid background in computer science, machine learning, and image processing, often supported by an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a related field, is essential. Experience with programming languages like Python, deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, and familiarity with medical imaging standards (like DICOM) are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to multidisciplinary teams are highly valued. These competencies enable professionals to develop and implement effective AI solutions that enhance diagnostic accuracy and workflow efficiency in healthcare settings.

What types of teams do Medical Imaging Machine Learning professionals typically work with, and how is collaboration structured?

Medical Imaging Machine Learning specialists often collaborate closely with radiologists, data scientists, software engineers, and clinical researchers to develop and refine AI-driven diagnostic tools. The work environment is usually multidisciplinary, involving regular meetings, code reviews, and joint problem-solving sessions to ensure alignment between technical solutions and clinical needs. Team members may also work with regulatory experts to ensure compliance with healthcare standards. This collaborative approach ensures that models are both technically robust and clinically relevant, ultimately supporting better patient outcomes.

Job description

We are looking for an engineering leader with a strong background in medical imaging, AI, and programming languages such as C++ and CUDA to shape our new ultrasound imaging platform. As the Software Manager for the Imaging and AI team, you will lead a team developing and optimizing algorithms and techniques related to ultrasound signal processing, image formation, and analysis. The primary focus of this role is to improve the quality, accuracy, and interpretation of ultrasound images for DeepSight's revolutionary Ultrasound system.

As a Software Manager for Imaging and AI, your responsibilities are:

  • Team Management and Mentorship: Manage a team of individual contributors and cultivate a high-performing team
  • Strategic Planning: Work closely with product and project management teams to define software deliverables, set timelines, and prioritize tasks in alignment with the company's goals for the ultrasound imaging platform.
  • Technical Implementation: Maintain hands-on involvement by reviewing and contributing to the implementation of critical algorithms using C++ and CUDA, serving as a technical resource and problem solver for the team.
  • Guide Advanced Algorithm Development: Oversee the research and development of advanced algorithms and image processing techniques to enhance spatial resolution and image quality in ultrasound imaging, providing technical mentorship to team members.
  • Foster AI and Machine Learning Integration: Champion the exploration and implementation of machine learning and AI techniques to enhance image analysis, automate diagnostic workflows, and assist clinicians with interpretation tasks.
  • Facilitate Systems Integration: Collaborate with systems and hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components for optimized data acquisition, processing, and display.
  • Ensure Compliance and Quality Standards: Ensure the team adheres to relevant regulatory and quality standards (e.g., ISO 13485, IEC 62304), integrating robust verification and validation practices into the development lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in an engineering or computer science field
  • Familiarity in signal and image processing and algorithm development in medical imaging
  • Strong background in object-oriented programming, software architecture, and design patterns
  • Proficiency with C++ programming
  • Experience in concurrent/parallel programming-multithreading, multiprocessing, GPU acceleration (CUDA, CuPy, Numba, OpenCL)
  • Deep familiarity with common developer tool sets, including source control, continuous integration, and automated unit testing
  • Proven ability to lead and manage technical teams in designing, implementing, and optimizing algorithms for imaging applications.
  • Adept at collaborating with cross-functional teams, including hardware, systems, and clinical stakeholders.
  • Passionate about medical devices, with excellent communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical/Biomedical engineering with a dissertation topic related to medical imaging
  • Knowledge of ultrasound physics, beamforming, simulation and algorithm development
