Job description

Position Summary

The Medical Gas Systems Design and Sales Consultant drives new asset deployment and medical gas equipment sales into new construction and major renovation projects across the assigned territory. This role owns the front end of the project: finding opportunities early, influencing the basis of design, developing and reviewing bid specifications, and converting that design influence into awarded medical gas pipeline and source equipment packages.

This position is the face of MTA to contractors, engineers, and facilities in the territory. It is remote and field-based and works hand in hand with an assigned Project Manager who handles estimating, take-offs, and back-office project administration. The Consultant owns the relationship, the specification, and the sale; the Project Manager owns the estimate and the execution support behind it.

Key Working Relationships

  • Reports to the Regional Manager – Central Region; aligns territory strategy, pricing posture, and pipeline priorities.
  • Partners daily with the assigned Project Manager, handing off documented scope, drawings, and specifications for estimating.
  • Coordinates with the MTA support center on quoting, order entry, and submittals, and with Service Managers on resourcing awarded projects.
  • Serves as the primary external contact for general contractors, mechanical contractors, engineers, and architects.

Essential Job Functions

New Construction Sales & Asset Deployment

  • Sell medical gas pipeline systems and source equipment — air compressors, vacuum pumps, manifolds, and alarms — into new construction and renovation projects.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities early in design, before equipment decisions are locked.
  • Own the full sales cycle from identification through proposal, negotiation, and award.
  • Meet or exceed an annual sales goal defined for each budget year.
  • Track all opportunities, activity, and forecasting in CRM and NetSuite.

Specification & Bid Development

  • Develop and influence medical gas specifications to position MTA as basis of design.
  • Review drawings, Division 22 medical gas and vacuum specifications, and addenda to determine scope and competitive positioning.
  • Provide specification language, product data, and code guidance to consulting engineers and design teams.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and job walks; document scope and site conditions for the Project Manager.
  • Identify scope gaps, exclusions, and alternates that affect pricing or risk, and escalate them before bid.

Market Presence

  • Build and maintain key relationships with contractors, engineering firms, architects, and hospital facilities teams.
  • Conduct lunch-and-learns, product presentations, and continuing education sessions.
  • Represent MTA at industry associations, trade shows, and regional healthcare construction events.
  • Maintain a consistent, professional field presence through regular in-person customer contact.

Project Handoff & Support

  • Provide the Project Manager complete scope, drawings, and customer requirements needed for accurate estimates.
  • Remain the customer-facing relationship owner through submittal, procurement, and execution.
  • Support the transition from award to installation, inspection, and verification.
  • Identify service, testing, certification, and maintenance opportunities generated by new construction awards.

General

  • Maintain working knowledge of NFPA 99, applicable ASSE standards, and AHJ requirements across the territory.
  • Comply with company policies; submit accurate expense reports, activity reports, and forecasts on schedule.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE on job sites; remain quiet and respectful in hospital patient spaces.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Regional Manager.

Travel

  • Primary territory: Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, with occasional requirements in neighboring states.
  • Up to 75% travel expected, including regular overnight stays.
  • Must reside within the territory near a major airport, with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time, exempt, remote/field-based; typical hours Monday–Friday but vary with customer, bid, and job site needs.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required for bid deadlines and industry events.

Qualifications

Required

  • Proven outside sales results in a technical, capital equipment, construction, or building systems environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Credibility with contractors, consulting engineers, and hospital facilities staff.
  • Strong communication, presentation, planning, and organizational skills; able to work independently in a remote role.
  • Basic understanding of financials, margin, and pricing fundamentals.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and CRM systems.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to travel up to 75%.
  • Commitment to the company’s core beliefs of integrity, safety, and customer service.

Preferred

  • Medical gas experience, or a closely related trade such as mechanical, plumbing, or HVAC capital sales.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 99 and medical gas system design requirements.
  • ASSE 6020 (Inspector), 6030 (Verifier), and/or 6060 (Designer) certification — a significant plus.
  • Existing contractor or engineering firm relationships in the Central Region.
  • Experience influencing basis-of-design specifications in healthcare construction.

Compensation

  • Base salary — to be determined based on experience.
  • Commission based on a percentage of Net Profit Margin, per MTA commission policy, on all sales made directly by the New Construction Sales Consultant. Rate and structure to be determined.
  • Company-provided laptop and mobile phone, plus reimbursement of approved travel and business expenses per MTA policy.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to walk active construction sites, mechanical rooms, and hospital environments, including ladders and stairs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and drive for extended periods, and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to clearly communicate and hear instructions in busy job site and hospital environments.
