Job description

Kalogon, a smart seating startup based in Melbourne, seeks a top notch Mechanical Engineer to help us expand our product lines as we adapt our seating technology for new customers. The ideal candidate will have experience with design for manufacture with injection molded assembly, ideally with consumer or medical device products.
What You'll Do
Design & Development
  • Designing injection moldable assemblies and supporting the production handoff
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and technical drawings using Onshape
  • Focus on electromechanical assembly design and work with electronics designer and product to figure out efficient integrated solutions for electromechanical systems
  • Develop and maintain design documentation, including specifications, test procedures, assembly instructions, and technical reports to meet criteria for inclusion in required reporting
  • Understand the impact of different material choices on product lifecycle, durability, and how this impacts what your design choices are
  • Translate product design requirements into thoughtful mechanical designs and solutions to meet customer needs
  • Work with Engineering team leader on deciding the right process for prototyping and volume production of parts
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams touching every part of the business
Project Management
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and budget constraints
  • Coordinate with suppliers, vendors, and manufacturing partners to ensure design feasibility and cost-effectiveness
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and failure analysis investigations
  • Present thorough project updates to stakeholders and management
  • Cultivate empathy with end users and ensure you understand their perspective and how it applies to your work
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost reduction initiatives
  • Contribute to the development of engineering standards and procedures
  • Support manufacturing processes and resolve production-related technical issues
Testing & Validation
  • Design and execute test protocols to validate product performance, reliability, and safety
  • Analyze test data and implement design improvements based on findings
  • Support prototype development and participate in design verification activities
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and implement corrective actions
Skills & Experience Required
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 4 years of professional mechanical engineering experience with at least 2 full product development cycles under your belt
  • Proven track record of successfully completing complex engineering projects from concept to production
  • Familiarity and previous collaboration on connected devices controlled by software
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Onshape, SolidWorks, Fusio360, Creo, or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of engineering fundamentals including mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software
  • Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes including sheet metal design and fabrication, machining, welding, casting, and injection molding
  • Experience with rapid prototyping technologies (3D printing, CNC machining)
Beneficial and Bonus Experience
  • Medical device experience
  • Experience in seating ergonomics or seating engineering
  • Knowledge of aviation or aerospace seating standards and certification requirements
  • Understanding of software development processes and agile methodologies
  • Pneumatics experience around sealing surface design

Role Details
  • Role reports to: Engineering Manager
  • Role works with: Development, Product, Product, Marketing, Sales
  • Role location: In Melbourne, FL with occasional opportunities to work from home
  • Some travel, estimated as 2 - 4 business trips a year
