Job Title: Medical Assistant
Job Description

The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring an efficient clinic flow and a welcoming, compassionate experience for patients each day. This role combines clinical and administrative responsibilities, including rooming patients, documenting in the electronic health record, managing daily schedules, and supporting providers with timely and accurate information. The Medical Assistant uses critical thinking and problem-solving skills to deliver professional, organized, and patient-centered care in a busy rheumatology practice.

Responsibilities

  • Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for patients and support an efficient daily clinic flow.
  • Record patients’ medical history, vital signs, and relevant clinical information, including test results, accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, and height.
  • Prepare treatment and examination rooms before each visit, ensuring they remain neat, clean, and fully stocked.
  • Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for evaluation by the physician or advanced practice provider.
  • Provide medically appropriate patient instructions under the direction of a physician or advanced practice provider.
  • Ensure all relevant patient information and documentation are complete and available in the electronic record prior to each appointment.
  • Manage back-office documentation, including prescription refills, lab requests, FMLA forms, referral paperwork, prior authorizations, and disability paperwork.
  • Schedule new and follow-up appointments using EMR and scheduling software.
  • Collaborate closely with other medical assistants and ancillary staff to support cohesive, team-based patient care.
  • Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, providers, and coworkers by following established standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and composure in high-stress situations while managing multiple changing priorities in an organized manner.
  • Continuously grow knowledge of medical, organizational, and administrative practices relevant to rheumatology care.
  • Report to and communicate effectively with the Medical Assistant Supervisor regarding workflow, issues, and process improvements.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Medical Assistant, including back-office documentation such as prescription refills, lab requests, FMLA forms, referral paperwork, and similar tasks.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR), with Epic strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in patient care tasks such as obtaining vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, and height.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and common office medical procedures and treatments.
  • Understanding of infectious disease precautions and safe clinical practices.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to work effectively with medical software and scheduling systems.
  • Knowledge of insurance and managed care operations, including use of EMR and scheduling software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and compassionate demeanor in high-stress situations, managing stress with grace and composure.
  • Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized manner.
  • High level of attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to always maintaining patient confidentiality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • National Medical Assistant certification is highly preferred; candidates may be in the process of obtaining certification within 30–60 days.
  • Experience working in a specialty practice, particularly rheumatology or related fields, is beneficial.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record is strongly preferred.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or similar credentials are advantageous.

Work Environment

This position is based in a rheumatology practice in Salem, Oregon, serving patients from the surrounding Willamette Valley. The schedule is full-time, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch break. The environment is a physician-owned, outpatient clinical setting focused on delivering high-quality, efficient, and compassionate care for patients with complex autoimmune and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis, psoriatic arthritis, and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Medical Assistants work in exam rooms, treatment areas, and front-office spaces, using electronic health records (Epic preferred), scheduling software, and standard clinical equipment for vital signs and patient assessments. The culture emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, respect, and continuous growth, with close collaboration between physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and ancillary staff. The role involves consistent patient interaction, a steady pace, and the need to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a calm, compassionate, and organized presence. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Salem, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.32 - $29.72/hr.
