Wage Range: $25.47 - $39.10 per hour plus 15% per diem rate
Posted wage ranges represent the entire range from minimum to maximum. For jobs with more than one level, the posted range reflects the minimum of the lowest level and the maximum of the highest level. Some positions also offer additional premiums based on shift, certifications, or degrees. Job offers are determined based on a candidate's years of relevant experience, level of education and internal equity.
Job Summary
Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients. Depending on work location, performs in-house phlebotomy, in house processing, phlebotomy in a physician office setting, or registration and phlebotomy in a patient service center. Demonstrate effective communication among laboratory colleagues, clients, physicians, medical office staff and patients.
Primary Duties
  1. Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections on patients of all age groups, and accurately identifies and labels all specimens following established laboratory protocol.
  2. Uses the laboratory information system or other reference laboratory’s web-based applications to independently solve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
  3. Processes all specimens in accordance with laboratory protocol including the proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
  4. Responsible for collecting all insurance/financial information necessary for proper billing. Demonstrates knowledge of requirements for collecting ABN’s and filling out MSPQ information.
  5. Accurately enters orders and patient demographic information in the laboratory information system.
  6. Answer and navigate calls with accuracy, efficiency, and courtesy using best customer service tactics and practices.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.
License, Certification, Education or Experience:
REQUIRED for the position:
  • High School graduate or equivalent or applicable coursework to be applied to obtain required WA State Medical Assistant – Phlebotomy (MA-P) - Certification.
  • Certification from an approved phlebotomy-training program with successful completion of a required internship preferred, or relevant work experience.
  • Medical terminology
  • State of Washington Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist (MA-P) or equivalent.
  • Have and maintain current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
DESIRED for the position:
  • 3 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory customer service or specimen processing role
  • Previous training and competence in dealing with the unique needs in the range of customer service situations with clinicians and their office staff
  • Working knowledge of the various government regulations specifically Medicare and the Washington state medical Test Site regulations. Working knowledge of the College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and the Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria
