Job description

Title: Medical Assistant
Reports to: Front Line Supervisor
Status: Non-Exempt / Hourly / Full-Time / In-person
Location: Based at our Health Clinic in Richmond, CA . Work 2x monthly at our Oakland clinic. Occasional coverage at the Antioch clinic.
Pay: $21-22/ hour

Brighter Beginnings is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and has been responding to the needs of families in under-resourced neighborhoods since 1984, when our work began in response to the alarming differences in mortality and illness rates among African American babies compared to other children.
Brighter Beginnings has grown into a respected and well-connected organization with locations in Oakland, Richmond, Bay Point, and Antioch. We have a multi-cultural, bi-lingual staff of passionate and committed family-service professionals; in fact, many of our staff came to this work because of the challenges they faced in their own families.
Position Summary
This is a full-time Medical Assistant position based at our Community Health Clinic in Richmond, with occasional work at our Antioch sites. In this role, you will be directly serving the community, providing affordable family healthcare to individuals and families who need it most. You will perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the Front Line Supervisor.
Candidate Requirements:
  • Bilingual (English- Spanish)
  • Minimum of High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Medical Assistant Associate Degree or Medical Assistant Certificate
  • Preferred: 1 Year of customer service in a medical office
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, data entry, and business email, with the ability to learn more programs
  • Valid California Driver's License, a good DMV record, and transportation available to meet job requirements with vehicle insurance.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and occasionally work at an alternative site
We're looking for someone with:

  • Flexibility to fill in at our Oakland and Antioch clinics as needed
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including spelling and English grammar with the ability to understand and complete oral and written instructions.
Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Clinical Support: Record patient medical history, vital signs (weight/height), and test results accurately in Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Patient Intake: Greet and escort patients to exam rooms, ensuring they are properly prepared for their visit with the provider.
  • Laboratory Services: Perform capillary blood tests, collect and log laboratory specimens (blood, tissue, etc.), and prepare them for testing.
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications, vaccinations, and injections as directed by providers and within the MA scope of practice.
  • Diagnostic Screening: Conduct EKGs, vision screenings, and hearing screenings as required
  • Provider Assistance: Assist MDs, FNPs, and RNs with clinical procedures and serve as a chaperone for male providers during exams of female or pediatric patients.
  • Pharmacy Coordination: Communicate prescription information and authorized refills to pharmacies at the provider's request.
  • Patient Education: Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and health education instructions to patients.
  • Room Maintenance: Prepare, stock, and sterilize treatment rooms and instruments; ensure proper disposal of contaminated supplies.
  • Quality Control: Perform routine control tests for Point of Care (POC) machines to ensure equipment accuracy.
  • Scheduling & Registration: Register new and returning patients, schedule appointments, and perform daily appointment confirmation calls.
  • Financial Processing: Collect co-pays and self-pay assessments, and accurately enter charges into the electronic system.
  • Insurance Verification: Verify insurance and assist with enrollment in special programs (PE4PP, CPE, FPACT) and Sliding Fee Scale Discount programs.
  • Records Management: Maintain medical records, ensure accurate coding for insurance purposes, and collect necessary demographic and financial data.
  • Administrative Support: Provide general administrative assistance to the Front Line Supervisor and Clinic Manager as needed, including Front Desk coverage as needed, calling patients, and preparing the schedule for the following day.
  • Translation: Provide bilingual translation services between providers and Spanish-speaking patients.
  • Compliance: Adhere strictly to all BBFHC Policies and Procedures, including safety and admission guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Job Requirements
This job requires passing an evaluation of a background check, a negative TB test or clear chest x-ray (less than 1 year old), Physical Exam (less than 6 months old), and providing updated vaccination records, including Hepatitis B vaccination, annual flu vaccination, and Covid-19 vaccination. The Physical examination must indicate that the employee can meet the physical requirements of the job including Lifting, Walking, Stooping, Bending, and Twisting.
