About this opportunity:

The Division of Marketing and Communications is seeking a creative, detail-oriented Videographer and Editor to join our Creative Services team. This position plays a key role in bringing the Ball State story to life through compelling visual storytelling. The successful candidate will lead video projects from concept to completion, managing all aspects of pre-production, production, and post-production, including videography, audio, lighting, editing, motion graphics, animation, and scriptwriting.
Working collaboratively with campus partners and external vendors, this position serves as a creative consultant and producer, developing engaging video and multimedia content that advances the University's strategic goals, enhances its brand, and connects with a variety of audiences.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function:

Direct and produce visually compelling video stories from pre-production through post-production using strong visual storytelling, cameras, audio, lighting, editing, animated graphics, and scriptwriting that support the goals, objectives, and brand of Ball State University. Serve as a consultant and producer for campus colleagues and external vendors on the creation of compelling video, graphics, and animation content.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or other related field from an accredited institution

  • Two years of experience in video production and multimedia content and some experience with basic motion graphics and animation.

  • Strong narrative and digital storytelling skills.

  • Proficiency in video and audio capture, as well as video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro.

  • Experience creating basic motion graphics and animations.

  • Knowledge of media codecs, video encoding software, streaming technologies, and digital media formats.

  • Working knowledge of video and photography equipment, including camera controls, shutter speeds, apertures, lenses, filters, and visual effects.

  • Understanding of professional audio recording techniques in a variety of environments and conditions.

  • Knowledge of lighting principles, including three-point lighting, white balance, and color temperature.

  • The ability and understanding to ensure that all videos created meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. accessibility compliance when uploading videos to YouTube, including captioning and audio descriptions

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and edit high-quality video content under tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience producing video content within a marketing, communications, or content strategy environment.

  • Demonstrated experience developing scripts and creating video content for websites, social media platforms, and other digital channels.

  • Experience producing video content and storytelling materials in a higher education setting.

  • Familiarity with mirrorless camera systems, drones, gimbals, and other professional video production equipment.

  • Experience using Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, and other creative software for motion graphics, audio enhancement, and branded video production.

  • Knowledge of post-production workflows, including visual effects, audio sweetening, color correction, and final video delivery for multiple platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work effectively in a small in-house production environment, including solo production when needed and close collaboration with the Manager of Videography and Production, writers, designers, photographers, social media staff, and campus clients.

  • Serve as a consultant and liaison for campus colleagues on the creation of compelling video content, translating university messaging into compelling videos that exemplify the Ball State brand.

  • Develop engaging video content that tells the Ball State story in ways that build and deepen positive relationships across constituencies.

  • Consult with and advise clients to assist with writing video scripts in order to create accurate and informative videos for campus clients.

  • Direct, film, capture and edit a variety of footage, including interviews, live event coverage, and studio production.

  • Assist with studio-based video and audio productions, including interviews, podcasts, multi-camera recordings, lighting, audio setup, and basic troubleshooting.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with other media-related areas across campus and in the community in order to ensure a regular flow of up-to-date video content for the website, social media, and other marketing and promotional use.

  • Maintain expert knowledge of interactive video developments and all aspects of video production, including directing and cinematography, clean audio and lighting, as well as post-production editing techniques and software for audio sweetening, color grading, animated graphics, and compression formats for various delivery channels.

  • Understand and adapt to the demands of a deadline-based editorial team, be able to write and follow creative briefs that help complete the goals and mission of the client and Ball State University.

  • Stay abreast of the latest video equipment and techniques used in the industry.

  • Develop and express visual identity for photo and video consistent with the university's brand through appropriate techniques.

  • Advise and facilitate collaboration with Marketing and Communications colleagues, as well as other clients, on video projects.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
