What is a media management software engineer?

Media Management Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems that handle the storage, organization, and distribution of digital media assets such as videos, images, and audio files. They work on building scalable platforms for streaming, archiving, tagging, and retrieving media efficiently. These engineers collaborate with teams to ensure seamless integration with other content delivery systems and often work with cloud services, databases, and media processing tools to optimize workflows and user experiences.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a media management software engineer?

To thrive as a Media Management Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or C++, a solid understanding of media formats, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with digital asset management systems, cloud storage platforms, media transcoding tools, and relevant APIs is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and adaptability help you stand out when addressing complex media workflows and collaborating across departments. These skills ensure the development, integration, and maintenance of efficient media management solutions that support organizational content needs.

What are common challenges media management software engineers face when integrating new media formats or technologies?

Media Management Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new media formats or emerging technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with existing systems, maintaining performance with large volumes of data, and adhering to industry standards for content security and metadata management. Staying current with rapidly evolving codecs, streaming protocols, and storage solutions is essential. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including QA, UX designers, and IT—is crucial to address these challenges effectively and deliver seamless user experiences.

Job description

York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, transforming, and enabling next- generation space mission operations worldwide. Today, York is one of the most innovative aerospace companies, specializing in end-to-end customer solutions and the rapid production of spacecraft platforms. York's complete Space Segment Solution includes spacecraft production, payload integration, system integration & test, launch services, ground segment services, and mission operations, enabling customers to leverage York's existing technology solutions to get to orbit rapidly and responsively. We're looking to expand our team across the board.
We are looking for talented, cross-domain software engineers to join a small, empowered strategic development team focused on rapid prototyping and advanced development across York's software portfolio. This team operates ahead of program need proving out new capabilities, de-risking emerging technology, and maturing prototypes to the point where they can transition into production programs. Scope spans across York software: Full stack web development, onboard embedded and real-time software, ground and cloud applications and tooling, and autonomy and machine learning.
We are looking for a Battle Management Software Engineer who is passionate about pushing the boundaries of modern technology to advance our constellation management and visualization capabilities using AI agentic coding techniques. Your focus will be developing software components that enhance mission planning, system coordination, and real-time decision support. You will use AI driven development workflows and modern distributed system design to enhance existing situational awareness capabilities and to integrate new battle management capabilities, which enable responsive, data driven operations. You will have the unique experience of integrating your work with advanced simulation software and even seeing it in operation at York.
Not all skills below are required, we encourage you to apply if you have an interest in learning!
Key Responsibilities
  • Design software architectures suitable for agentic development
  • Evaluate, debug, and improve agent behavior, including monitoring output quality, ensuring reliability, and enforcing safety or coding standards
  • Translate designs and requirements into high-quality, maintainable software that meets both functional and visual standards
  • Build reusable code for components, shared libraries, and scalable services for use across the platform
  • Engineer algorithms and business logic to promote scalability and automation
  • Develop unit tests and documentation for internal users and customers
  • Develop integration tests against simulation tools to validate behavior against realistic mission scenarios
  • Participate in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with modern messaging frameworks and API technologies used in distributed systems
  • Experience with Git in a collaborative, multi-contributor environment
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and drive code quality through reviews and design discussions
  • Proven ability to collaborate across engineering, design, and operational stakeholders
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate ambiguous requirements independently and drive to resolution
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presenting technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain one
  • Willingness to work full-time in our Greenwood Village, CO office; this position does not support remote or hybrid work.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, and Python building web-based user interfaces
  • Experience building and configuring agentic AI systems that streamline software development lifecycles by accelerating development, automating routine code assembly, and enforcing strict structural guardrails
  • Proficient designing systems that leverage LLM-driven agents, tool-calling, or multi-step orchestration
  • Familiar with vehicle simulation tools and methodologies, including modeling spacecraft dynamics, guidance and control behaviors, and mission-specific scenarios
  • Experience with container-based installation and deployment strategies, including Docker and CI/CD pipeline integration
  • Familiar with modern security practices including API token management, CUI or classified information handling, and/or air-gapped environments
