What is a mechatronics engineer?

Mechatronics Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain intelligent systems and products by integrating mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control engineering. They work on a wide range of technologies, such as robotics, automated manufacturing systems, and smart devices. Their expertise enables them to create innovative solutions that combine hardware and software to improve efficiency, performance, and reliability in various industries. Mechatronics Engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex engineering challenges.

What do mechatronics engineers do?

Mechatronics engineers help design and manufacture new technology, parts, tools, and machine control systems for production manufacturing. Your duties include analyzing and assessing automated production and determining ways to improve productivity and efficiency through the introduction of new tools. You visit assembly lines, observe machinery, and then make suggestions for ways to engineer new machines that will speed up production. You and your team must take into consideration many different elements of the production process in order to build a tool or machine that will be easy to use while also improving assembly-line efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechatronics engineer?

To thrive as a Mechatronics Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Proficiency with CAD software, PLC programming, and simulation tools, as well as familiarity with robotics and automation systems, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this multidisciplinary field. These skills and qualities enable engineers to innovate, optimize complex systems, and ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electronic components in advanced technologies.

What are some common challenges mechatronics engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechatronics engineers often collaborate with specialists from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering backgrounds, which can lead to challenges in communication and aligning project goals. Navigating differences in terminology, design approaches, and problem-solving methods requires strong interpersonal and project management skills. Successful mechatronics engineers proactively foster clear communication and regularly coordinate with team members to ensure all aspects of a project are integrated smoothly. This collaborative environment also provides an excellent opportunity to broaden technical expertise and develop leadership skills.

What is the difference between Mechatronics Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectMechatronics EngineerElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electrical EngineeringBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentDesigning and integrating mechanical, electronic, and software systemsDesigning electrical circuits, systems, and power distribution
Industry UsageAutomation, robotics, manufacturing, consumer electronicsPower, telecommunications, electronics manufacturing

Mechatronics Engineers focus on integrating mechanical, electronic, and software components to develop intelligent systems, while Electrical Engineers primarily work on electrical circuits and power systems. Both roles share similar educational backgrounds and often collaborate in industries like automation and manufacturing, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and specialization.

Job description

Location: Everett, WA

Fluke Calibration is seeking an experienced Staff Systems Engineer with a strong mechanical engineering foundation to provide product design and cross-disciplinary technical leadership for Temperature Calibration (TCAL) products, sustaining industry-leading calibration baths, dry-wells, furnaces, and metrology standards while contributing to next-generation platform designs. This role is based in Fluke Park HQ Everett, WA.

Key ResponsibilitiesProduct Design & Thermal Engineering
  • Own mechanical and thermal design for new TCAL products, including baths, dry-wells, furnaces, and metrology standards (SPRT/PRT, fixed-point cells).
  • Apply refrigeration and heater-system design across the full TCAL range of products.
Sustaining Engineering
  • Lead sustaining programs supporting the factory, including component EOL mitigation, quality improvement, and yield improvement.
Cross-Functional Technical Leadership
  • Bridge mechanical, electrical, embedded software, and metrology disciplines on shared problems.
  • Translate metrology requirements (uncertainty, stability) into mechanical constraints, and back again.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Extensive experience in mechanical, mechatronics, or electromechanical systems engineering, with a strong background in thermal systems design (refrigeration, heater systems)
  • Precision mechanical design for thermal systems: tolerance stack-up, materials selection, sealing for thermal cycling
  • Proficient with MCAD (e.g., Creo), ASME Y14.5 (GD&T), and DFX/DFMEA
  • Sub-ambient refrigeration expertise: vapor-compression cycle design, low-GWP refrigerants, EEV control
  • Experience specifying thermal-loop control behavior clearly enough for firmware to implement and test
Desired
  • Thermal FEA simulation, CFD for convection, radiative heat transfer, gradient/uniformity characterization
  • Experience sustaining test/measurement/calibration products with long service lifetimes
  • Proven ability to lead technical direction across disciplines without direct managerial authority
  • Familiarity with global compliance standards (CE, FCC, RoHS, IEC 61010)
  • Metrology fluency (ITS-90, uncertainty budgeting, sensor behavior) sufficient to avoid mechanical decisions that corrupt measurement
  • Experience with manufacturing scale-up, factory transitions, or supply chain strategy
