What is the difference between Mechatronics Engineer Solar vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechatronics Engineer SolarMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechatronics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications in solar technologyBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; optional certifications in renewable energy
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and maintaining solar systems, often in labs or outdoor sitesDesigning and analyzing mechanical systems, primarily in offices or manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageRenewable energy, specifically solar power projectsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and general engineering sectors

While both roles require engineering degrees, Mechatronics Engineers Solar focus on integrating electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems for solar energy solutions, often working directly on solar projects. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across various industries. The two roles overlap in design and testing but differ in specialization and application areas.

Role Purpose

Corning Incorporated is hiring a Senior Engineer, Controls in Corning, NY. This is a full-time onsite role that typically works Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week, with flexibility as needed to support project objectives. Travel averages approximately 50%, although actual travel may increase or decrease depending on project phase and business needs. Travel is primarily domestic to support multiple locations, and international travel may be required. Relocation assistance is available. This role may also be based in Charlotte, Hickory, or Wilmington, NC depending on business needs.

If you're an automation engineer ready to move beyond single-site maintenance work and get hands-on experience across real capital projects - this is the opportunity to make that move. This position sits within Corning's MT&E Automation Controls Systems Engineering organization, where you'll support controls engineering projects from design and build through installation and commissioning, delivering PLC-based automation solutions for new equipment, factory expansions, and process improvements at Corning manufacturing facilities nationwide. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, plant teams, and system integrators - building the kind of multi-site, multi-phase project experience that seriously accelerates a controls engineering career.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support controls engineering projects through design, build, installation, startup, and commissioning phases.
  • Develop and modify PLC and HMI programs for manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
