Job Title: Mechatronics Engineer
Location: Lafayette/W. Lafayette, IN
Job Type: Full-Time | On-Site

We are seeking an Mechatronics Engineer to join an innovative engineering team developing next-generation scientific instruments. This role combines robotics, fluidics, embedded electronics, firmware, and mechanical design to create advanced electromechanical systems.

We are working on the design of a single bench top product. We're looking for someone who designs electronics for electromechanical control, rather than applies the off the shelf electronics to build up production systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hands-on product development and working across multiple engineering disciplines within a collaborative startup environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and improve electromechanical systems for scientific instrumentation.
  • Develop and maintain robotic and fluidic subsystems.
  • Design and prototype electronic circuits using microcontrollers, sensors, motor drivers, and control electronics.
  • Develop and maintain real-time embedded control firmware.
  • Perform hardware assembly, integration, testing, debugging, and validation.
  • Improve product performance, manufacturability, and system reliability.
  • Integrate electromechanical hardware with optical systems.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute innovative engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and systems engineers.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of product development experience involving electromechanical systems.
  • Strong understanding of robotics, motion control, sensors, actuators, and electromechanical design.
  • Experience designing electronic hardware including:
    • Microcontrollers
    • Sensors
    • Stepper motor drivers
    • Power and control electronics
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling and rapid prototyping.
  • Hands-on fabrication experience using machine shop tools such as milling machines, lathes, drills, or sheet metal equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced engineering environment with evolving priorities.

Experience with any of the following is a plus, but is not required:
  • Fluidics
  • Robotics
  • Scientific instrumentation
  • Optical systems
  • Photonics
  • Embedded firmware
  • FPGA development
  • Physical simulation (thermal, fluid, electromagnetic)
