How much do mechanical integrity jobs pay per year?
What is a Mechanical Integrity job?
A Mechanical Integrity job focuses on ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of industrial equipment and systems. Professionals in this role inspect, test, and analyze mechanical components such as pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks to prevent failures and accidents. They work with regulations like OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) standards to develop maintenance strategies and risk assessments. This role is crucial in industries like oil and gas, chemicals, and manufacturing.
What are some of the main challenges faced by Mechanical Integrity professionals in their daily work?
Mechanical Integrity professionals often face the challenge of balancing rigorous inspection schedules with ongoing operations, quickly addressing unplanned equipment issues, and ensuring all regulatory standards are met. They may work in dynamic environments, such as refineries or manufacturing plants, where safety and precision are paramount. Adaptability and effective prioritization are key, as the role involves coordinating with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to prevent costly failures. These challenges also make the work engaging, offering opportunities to problem-solve and innovate while contributing directly to a facility’s operational success.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mechanical Integrity position, and why are they important?
To excel in a Mechanical Integrity role, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, metallurgy, or a related field, with expertise in codes and standards such as API, ASME, and NDT techniques. Familiarity with inspection management software, reliability analysis tools, and certifications like API 510/570 or CWI are highly advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. These capabilities are vital to ensuring the safety, compliance, and reliability of critical equipment in industrial environments.

Job description
Position Overview:
The Mechanical Integrity Engineer is responsible for managing and executing the mechanical integrity and inspection programs for fixed equipment within the Southeast Region (SEUS). This role focuses on ensuring the integrity, reliability, and regulatory compliance of pressure vessels, piping systems, and storage tanks through the implementation of API inspection standards.
The Mechanical Integrity Engineer will support and oversee inspection activities in accordance with API 510, API 570, and API 653, ensuring that equipment inspection intervals, repairs, and alterations comply with applicable codes and company standards. The role works closely with operations, maintenance, and inspection personnel to monitor equipment condition, evaluate damage mechanisms, and implement corrective actions that support safe and reliable plant operation.
The ideal candidate will bring strong knowledge of fixed equipment inspection, corrosion management, and industry codes, along with the ability to analyze inspection data and drive improvements in asset integrity and reliability.
Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and maintain the mechanical integrity program to ensure the safety and reliability of equipment such as pressure vessels, pipelines, storage tanks, and heat exchangers.
Plan, coordinate, and oversee inspections of critical equipment, including non-destructive testing (NDT), visual inspections, pressure tests, and thickness gauging.
Ensure compliance with inspection schedules and regulatory requirements in alignment with industry codes (e.g., API, ASME, OSHA) and Linde Gas Procedures.
Review and analyze inspection data to identify trends, anomalies, and areas of concern.
Evaluate and manage corrosion rates, wear, material degradation, and life expectancy of equipment.
Collaborate with regulatory bodies and internal/third-party auditors during inspections and certifications.
Maintain comprehensive documentation on mechanical integrity programs, inspection records, repairs, and certifications for audits and legal compliance.
Collaborate with maintenance teams to plan and execute repairs, modifications, or upgrades for mechanical equipment and systems.
Make recommendations on appropriate materials, repairs, or replacements to improve safety and longevity.
Monitor repair quality and verify compliance with engineering specifications and standards.
Maintain updated records of inspections, repairs, and asset integrity assessments in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Develop reports on mechanical system performance, risks, and integrity management activities for internal use and external stakeholders.
Analyze data to drive improvements in asset integrity and performance.
Work closely with engineers, maintenance and operations teams, reliability experts, and management to ensure proper integration of mechanical integrity efforts within overall operations.
Provide technical guidance and training to operations and maintenance personnel on mechanical integrity standards, processes, and best practices.
Actively participate in incident investigations related to mechanical equipment and provide engineering input to improve safety systems.
Facilitate failure analysis investigations to determine root causes and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
Track advancements in mechanical integrity practices, standards, and technologies, and recommend updates to programs and methods accordingly.
Identify opportunities for cost savings and process optimization without compromising safety or compliance.
Improve asset reliability and availability by implementing advanced engineering solutions such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance techniques.
Maintain comprehensive documentation on mechanical integrity programs, inspection records, repairs, and certifications for audits and legal compliance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Engineering Degree with 10 years' experience in mechanical integrity, mechanical, or chemical
At least one API Certification (510, 570, 653)
Proficiency with ASME, ANSI, and OSHA standards
Project Management PMP or equivalent experience
Experience with NDE methods and techniques used to support mechanical integrity programs.
