What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, systems integration, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring that complex mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated and function reliably within larger projects.

What are some common challenges Mechanical Integration Engineers face when coordinating with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Integration Engineers often work closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. One common challenge is aligning differing timelines, priorities, and technical requirements between teams, which can lead to integration delays or design conflicts. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial to proactively identify potential issues and facilitate effective collaboration. Being adaptable and solution-oriented helps in navigating these complexities to deliver a successful integrated product.

What does a Mechanical Integration Engineer do?

A Mechanical Integration Engineer is responsible for assembling, testing, and validating mechanical systems, ensuring that all components fit and function together as intended. They work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to integrate subsystems into a final product, troubleshoot issues, and verify compliance with technical specifications. Their role often involves hands-on work, use of CAD software, and collaboration across disciplines to deliver reliable and efficient mechanical solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Integration Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Integration EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating mechanical components into systems, ensuring compatibility and functionalityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies from concepts
Skills & CertificationsCAD, system integration, testing, often requires engineering degreeCAD, design software, prototyping, often requires engineering degree
Work EnvironmentSystems integration labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-disciplinary teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, robotics, where system integration is keyProduct development, consumer electronics, machinery design

While both roles require engineering backgrounds and CAD skills, Mechanical Integration Engineers focus on combining mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring they work seamlessly. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop individual components and assemblies. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

We’ve grown over 440% in the last 18 months because we take ownership, solve hard problems, and build with purpose. Join us to build the future.
Your Impact
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will support the design and development of Power Distribution Units (PDUs) and Remote Power Panels (RPPs) that serve mission‑critical environments. Your work will directly influence product durability, manufacturability, and integration of electrical systems into robust mechanical enclosures. You’ll collaborate closely with electrical, manufacturing, and vendor partners to bring high‑quality, production‑ready products from concept through validation.
This role is well‑suited for a hands‑on engineer who enjoys turning designs into real, buildable hardware and thrives in a fast‑growing, high‑accountability environment.
Your Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
  • Designing mechanical enclosures and assemblies for PDUs, RPPs, and related power distribution equipment
  • Creating detailed 3D models, drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs) using SolidWorks
  • Designing sheet metal components optimized for manufacturability, cost, and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • Collaborating with electrical engineers to integrate electrical components, cable routing, and mounting features into mechanical designs
  • Working closely with fabrication vendors to validate designs, resolve manufacturability concerns, and ensure quality standards are met
  • Supporting prototyping, testing, and product validation activities
  • Assisting with root cause analysis of design or manufacturing issues and implementing corrective improvements
  • Supporting engineering change requests and maintaining accurate design documentation
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of mechanical design standards and best practices
  • Performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3–4 years of relevant experience in mechanical design
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings
  • Experience designing sheet metal enclosures and components
  • Understanding of mechanical integration within electrical products, enclosures, or similar systems
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as laser cutting, punching, bending, and welding
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team‑oriented environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing PDUs, RPPs, switchgear, or similar electrical enclosures
  • Knowledge of thermal management, airflow, and structural considerations for electrical equipment
  • Familiarity with relevant UL standards
  • Experience using PDM systems and managing revision control
  • Exposure to ERP systems and BOM management
